PS: Actually I get about 20-30 fps Lower in this game than Cyberpunk 2077 ultra everything, RT, HDR, plus Reshade.. So yeah, it's a taxing game for sure at 2K maxed out. 4K you're really going to need some horsepower.
EDIT: LOOOL I should not respond here at 2am.. my apologies. Yeah no.. it's not viable with a 2060 rtx.
Elite is not the same, it doesn't really simulate things like x4, x4 is very CPU heavy, with a 4k screen you will need a high quality cpu and gpu.
When I went to 1440p I had to change my whole setup, new GPU, new CPU etc... because otherwise there is no way to get decent FPS on Ultra settings in recent games, you can get 25-35 FPS yeah but I don't pay a screen 1500$ to play with 25 FPS xD
In september I bought a 4k screen and again I had to change my CPU and my GPU because 2080TI was no longer enough to keep stable FPS in recent games.
12th gen cpu should be enough, they are some good prices on the internet but hell those 13th gen cpu look sexy xD
gaming in 4k is rather expensive, specially for games like x4 if you want to have decent FPS
edit:
Also a lot of people don't get this, I see a lot of people complaining about performance, people playing in 1440p, 2160p etc... with average setups, the minimum recommended specs is for 1080p, people don't realise how much it costs for your computer to render on a higher resolution...
never upgrade screen first, it's always computer then screen otherwise it's useless
If you have a 2060, there's no way you'll want to do 4K with this game. Am kinda surprised you said "it works great on Elite and 7D2D".. What's your definition of working great to you? 15-20 fps? The PC didn't explode? LOL.. I can't imagine you're pulling more than 20 fps with that card at 4K. Which to me, 20 fps is not very good at all xD
2060's are okayish for budget cards.. However, not to be mean or brag here but my old build from 2016 with my 1080 gtx is basically better than your 2060 in nearly everything except that it's a gtx and not a rtx. And even still my 1080 couldn't pull off 4k gaming (with decent fps) so I highly doubt your 2060 will be able to do it unless you have some kind of godly 2060 like a Hall of Fame or Kingpin but even then, I'd be skeptical lol.. Like yes, my 1080 could display games at 4k on my 4k tv too but the fps was so low I went straight back to 1080p. Anything below 60 fps is just not my cup of tea.
With that said, you might be able to pull 2K gaming aka 1440P on most games. Just don't expect 4K unless your definition of good is 15-20 fps then go for it.
Oh and just to second what Bozz said, you really should upgrade your rig before your tv or monitor. 4K is demanding. I mean my 3080 is getting 70 fps at 2k ultra everything as reference for this game. Take away another 30-40 fps if you go up to 4K you're looking at 30 fps for this game and maybe 50 fps for Cyberpunk with a 3080. Not ideal for me which is why I decided to go 2K. I'll get a 4K monitor when I can afford a card that can deliver around 100 fps minimum in all my games. Key word; afford lol. 4000's can do that but cost way too much. So I'll just wait :)
Anyways.. Best of luck on whatever you decide to do. If you don't mind super low fps you can probably get away playing this and other games at 4K but personally I think you should stick to 1080p or 1440p for best results. Take care!
Yeah, the 2060 is ofc the first generation of cards that even claimed to do 4k so I'm certainly just peeking over the counter here. That's okay, my OLED TV is limited to 60 mhz anyway, and 4k was just a side benefit to the OLED aspect. So if it doesn't work, no biggie.
I hadn't considered the CPU aspect of X4, that's a good data point to collect, whether heavy CPU usage limits 4k. That alone is worth the reinstall. And ofc these games bog down any PC when standing on busy stations, etc.
So I think you're underestimating the 2060, even the 6gb version is quite solid at full 4k. The only time I'm not at 55+ in ED is planetary settlements, even in the concourse and empty planets it's perfectly fine. I don't run at that though, I upscale so I can run the ground settlement combat matches at more than 35 FPS :)
Although maybe it's the rest of my rig helping out, I bought a premade so the CPU is commensurate with the GPU.
And somehow 7D2D is just a beast and runs smooth no matter what I do to it. And I'm even hosting the server. -\0.0/- Also WoW is super solid at full 4k, although obv not during raids.
It was definitely a budget buy, really just wanted to get 60 FPS in ARK at 1080p and ofc it did that fine. Everything past that is just icing on the cake.
On the other hand X4 is very CPU dependent and my CPU atm is way too old for stuff like this.
I generally disable all AA to relieve the overhead. At higher resolutions I find it somewhat redundant anyhow.
That's not true unless you have several fleets of like 500 asgards
I have some very advanced games hundreds of hours and even a 1.000 hour long save and have no issues with fps...
disabling AA is not a bad solution if you have issues with FPS, there is also a reshade for x4 that looks nice and works well without AA
Curious.. Have you enabled "show FPS in games" through Steam > Settings > In Game menu? REALLY curious to know what FPS you are getting at 4K with this game on a 2060.. xD
Here we go. I was A) recording with OBS but at the lowest bitrates I can have for decent quality at 1080p and B) I forgot what else. (oh, right, I was downscaling to 1080p from 4k so that requires extra CPU I think).

Like I said, this is a CLEAN pc.
I think having an issue with fps nosediving as the universe opens up and develops is going to be a subjective thing, but the fact is the fps degrades over time. Other than you, literally every single user I have come across has had this happen to them.
I have a 3080ti
i5 13600k
32gb ddr 5
nvme
Game runs like a dream in the beginning but eventually runs like doodoo. Its been documented there are several design/engine limitations that contribute to this.
Well if we look at the last survey (20.000 people participated) that's not completelly true.
I think there is a vocal minority around steam forums that complain a lot about it, I don't think optimization is great, but even my 2018 computer could run this game properly on vanilla (0 mods) as long as I don't build a 1500 modules station.
I mean there was literally a guy on youtube complaining hi has FPS issues and he had fleets of 500 Nemesis's ^^
the game is very open to what you can achieve so if you go beyond what your computer can handle 100% of people will have issues, if you can stay disciplined and accept that you must limit yourself then you won't have issues
The FPS seems really low man. I had to turn it off once you started walking around. It's just like my 1080 gtx. Like yes, your able to display 4K but to game? It's subjective. For me, 15-30 fps gives me headaches/motion sickness. It doesn't seem to bother you though so that's awesome :D Not raining trying to rain on your parade. If it floats your boat that's all that matters!
Also remember that this is while RECORDING AT 4K. So it'll presumably be much smoother and higher otherwise.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the video itself is only 30 FPS ofc cause I'm not about to record at 60 FPS, that's crazy.
Below 40 FPS starts to bug me and I'll start turning things down or looking for fixes. Like in Elite I can play the ground combat at 45 if I have to, so I can just barely have it at 4k.
