Tips for improving performance (mods, settings)
Hey everyone,

I just started playing and I'm having some issue with performance that seems to be all over the place. In quiet sectors I'll get max fps (165, as much as my monitor supports), while in other places I get mid 40s. I thought it might be the presence of stations or other ships but even in scenarios that look nearly identical to my eyes the variance can be over 40 fps between the two, so I'm suspecting it's due to some particles, fog or other things? I'm running max settings with 2x MSAA and volumetric fog on medium. I'll try removing MSAA first to see if that helps, but if anyone else has any tips please do post them.

I'm not familiar with this series and its engine but I did read that performance is a common complaint, however I think my specs are high enough that I should be getting 60+ in most scenarios: Ryzen 5 5600x, RTX 3060 TI, 1440p.

Hello ^^

Your eyes can easily lie to you, as, as far i know, X4 load everything in your sector as soon as you enter it (or they enter it), even if not actually show on your screen cause of too far.

Also, it seem the more you explore / the more you have satellittes, the more it became berformance heavy on the long run to keep track every single position.

Your graphical card is totaly decent, but yep, turning fancier things like msaa, lowering shadows, reflect etc, may help a lot.

X4 is one of the games where ultra high fps isn't really required, so playing at 40-60 fps is okeyish. At some point most player spend probably more time with their booty on a station and managing their fleety on the minimap regardless. xD

Larger Asteroids mod seemed to help me. Reduces the overall asteroid count.

I read somewhere on reddit, alt-tab out to taskmanager, then set x4.exe priority to higher than normal and deactivating core 0 helps with performance. deactivating 0 of your cpu, because it is also responsible for many low level processes of windows.
