I tried making the pilot better but it doesn't help, sometimes it will stay there for like 1 hour saying "unable to find suitable trade in sector" and then after an hour or so it will start trading.
I just found the below thread. - basically the answer was from the developer - they only by BELOW average price and sell ABOVE average price. Stations in by game were all above average, but were profitable, and I wanted to keep the wharf supplied while there was some profit to be made.

you setup a sector to buy in, a ware you want and a max price your ship is allowed to pay.
then you setup a sector to sell in, a ware and a minimum price your ship is required to earn.
the auto traders, local and such, will never buy above average and most time never sell below average.
Thanks, I'll take another look at the repeat order, When I set that as the default behaviour it only had the ware option and the anchor sector option, then when I selected the station to buy the metals from there was no max price setting, (though I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before, can't recall where).
What I'm wanting to do is buy from TWO metals and deliver to just the wharf, but a setting of min/max price in place.
EDIT: I think I know where I went wrong - I wasn't clicking CONFIRM after setting the repeat order. I selected repeat, then went to station to buy... Doh Noticed the mistake I made watching the below excellent video within the first few minutes:
