i've already claimed a few ships on a new start. Some detail is missing in the tutorial and other locations i look for information, this personnel section is not there. It's a bit messed up so i'm gonna have to do this the old way, docking at each station to find a suitable pilot or two.
When i took the Oddy for a spin after taking her i got trapped in a minefield for another 2 hours waiting on repairs yesterday and early today. If you must travel through mines, either plot a straight course that takes you past the mines or try adjust your course during the pass through in order to minimise any mine contacts. However they can and will pull you out of travel drive, even a mine bumping off the ship can do it.
I would not suggest losing the repair drones onboard the ship, those are your vitally needed lifeline for keeping the ship in one piece, so when you are crippled, don't make any movements with your ship until the drones are done or face the prospect of having to reload your last save or starting over.

As it is right now, i've started another save, i'm making money as a parasite scavenging in second contact, i figure with these messages on the hud about what the argonians and antigonians are doing, "what the hey, let's see what the fuss is about". I really need that osprey (even if it is slow to get there and back) because it has the ability to help fill my cargo bay with ore and other bits and pieces, more than this junk piece of crap fighter i have atm.
Plenty of opportunity in second contact. Better than crystal mining back in the old days (oh i did some of that earlier. Those were 3 hours of my life i'd rather have back!)
For ,yself I will not complain, even I dont use so often this dirty trick. However like I dont play X4 crappy missions, it could help from time to time when I dont wishm to play again the same repetitive first hours of game.
Nota claim the Odyseus and come back with it into a civilised sector had become a peace of cake since the v4.00. Before that boarding the odyseus in the first hour of the game was complicated due to heavy kha ak and xenons presence in the area. Up to the v3.3 you often had to fly around, escape, and wait xenons and kha ak fight each other to try a quick boarding and escape. After the V4.00, pick up the odyseus became a joke. However it meets the new game orientation -- make the game pleasant and easy for 12 years old young girls.
About mines -- x4 is supposed to be in 3D but it very often think in 2D. Flying fairly above or under The Y 0 is enough to avoid any mine fields or radioactive asteroid fields.
