what the alliance did was to calculate the excat coordinates of systems within the known parts of the milkyway based on the observable constallations from within different systems.
the science behind this is pretty much how we utilise our space observatories...
I thought it was a system within the milky way, but REALLY far out - so far that there are barely any stars in the sky. As far as I remember, there is only 1 galaxy in the skybox (takes up about half the screen?), the rest of it is largely black, with only a few stars? At least, thats how I remember it. It is entirely possible that I got annoyed and just headcannoned it as a system 'within' the milky way but very, very, very far out.
fun fact the Sector Upwards of Ianamus zura IV has the same "skybox" and shows the milkyway from afar or atleast the same constellation as one of the UFJD Sectors mentioned
