Dirt new. Vanilla vs star wars mod?

Hello people. I got into x4 as it looks like a really fun game at first glance. I've played a little of the tutorial to understand that its got a lot to do underneath its hood and that it can turn from a space exploring sim to a empire management sim and whilst a bit daunting I feel like that I can tackle the challenge.

That being said, I have never played or looked into this wide vast universe of lore and stories and previous history and I really do feel like I'm lost at sea in a storm when it comes to understanding this world and its lore, peoples, so forth.

To that end, would it be better to try the star wars mod since I understand that universe? Or is there hope that I can understand the lore in a sort of A-Z situation like...I dunno, going to a space station library and spending hours reading about everything.

It sounds like they are really onto the next big thing. Might be the litcube of X4! Not a fan of early builds though gonna wait a bit on that and try VRO instead. Same author.

From what I heard, Star Wars mod is a lot of fun (I haven't tried it) but it isn't complete. So I'm personally waiting for more content. I've heard good things about VRO but honestly I'd probably play the base game first. Then add small QOL mods to that before diving into a total conversion.

They recently released and replaced the entire map with one based on the star wars galaxy

the 0.6 update from SWI is impressive and i think it is one of those big great mods already. That said, it is still a WIP and you will find vanilla x4 elements on it still. As of it is right now, the mod is a mix between two worlds (x4 and SW). If you dont mind this, go ahead and have fun, i hightly recommend it. If you want to wait for a bit more polish and integration, theres another great mod from the same author called VRO, that acts like a enhanced base game experience. Mix it with small QoL mods and you are ready to go aswell.

Star Wars mod is great but so is the base game. Just play the base game for a bit. Scan stations, get the Boron Scientist mission. Go install helpful mods if you find something annoying but overall just play. Get used to what an X game is before you start installing full rewrite mods.

Any of the base game starts works well, if you have the DLC it's the same for them... Except for Split Vendetta the Split Vendetta starts are better for more experienced splayers.

Personally, I'd play the vanilla first until I got bored with it, and used to it, then switch. Coming from where you are a few weeks ago, there's a lot to take in on a fresh first play, like A LOT.
I'm over 300 hours in and still learning the game.

I am currently playing the Star Wars mod, but I would recommend starting off the game with vanilla.
