Is "Escape plan" supposed to be this hard?

I'm on the mission "Escape plan" and it's way too hard for the ship they give you. The two fighters that attack the transport absolutely obliterate me. Am I not supposed to play through the story without getting a new ship after they took my old one and gave me this crappy one?

I'm very veeerrry new to this game btw. This is my first time playing.

Don't go near the transport if it's the boron mission as the transport doesn't get attacked unless you approach it.
Also there is a medium ship you can claim during the mission.

The mission where bosa wants you to protect the transport so he can go to the PHQ? All you need to do on that one is go to the system wait til bosa is in the transport and on his way to the station then leave the sector the Transport that you need to protect is in no danger unless you approach it.
