If you want to make your own edits more easily without having them overwritten by workshop automatic re-download, you want to go with nexusmods.
Also, a few mods are exclusively on the workshop, some are exclusively on nexusmods right now. So it's best to check both every now and then.
I have around 145 Mods installed and no issues so far.
FYI, the general consensus is that you should NOT use mods on your first play through. Get a feel for the game first. Remember it is a very diverse audience that plays this so mods often satisfy various niche plays, even popular ones. Many of us, like myself, with over a thousand hours into the game play vanilla. I've tried a bunch of mods and may add a couple next play through but they aren't necessary. Add the mods to support your play style.
Most mods modify the game in certain ways because people want something to be different (more combat, less combat... slower or faster pace, construction etc...)
you can't really know what you want to modify if you have not played the game.
well... i can tell you when i stickied the MODs and how to install non-steam Mods Topic i had in mind that people won't have to scroll through a myriad of pages to find it... same with the patchnotes, rules, etc.
