If that isn't what you want, you are going to have to define proper.
Despite all the posts made asking for hotas support that included pre-made control profiles including the X52 pro Egosoft did nothing to grant those requests, so i wouldnt have too much "faith" in egosoft if i were you.
This made me laugh.
I dont have a lot of faith in developers finding a middle ground, its always extreme left or right.
Whats so hard about binding a couple of buttons though really? I do it with my mouse in half the games i play, dont see why it would be any more difficult with a joystick.
2. You say " Whats so hard about binding a couple of buttons though really? " so if it is so easy Egosoft could do it in a day for all major hotas sticks, they are selling a game to us, Elite Dangerous has pre-made bindings for all the sticks, it is called making a finished product catering for the people that they are selling a game to, why would you be making the case that people should make their own bindings, plenty of people tried to make bindings for their X52 pro and it never worked properly, why would you not want a developer to make pre-made bindings ? after all if people did not like the bindings then they can make their own, why would you not want to cater for all peoples preferences ?
You might as well say when you go to buy a new car "Whats so hard about putting the wheels on the car yourself after you buy it ?, i do it with all the cars i buy"
Without requiring twenty fingers and hours of setting it up manually.
I do agree with other commentors how it's either one extreme or the other, but Elite Dangerous only did one good thing and that was the flight control. Being able to drop out of hyperspace thingy directly in front of the station and zoom in while requesting landing permision is an easy trick. Apart from that though there's no real point to the game.
Back on topic personally it's about immersion. I want to feel like I'm flying a spaceship not commanding a submarine. I was able to get used to both keyboard/mouse and the X52 HOTAS setup in ED but for immersion I prefered the TrackIR HOTAS and on occasion VoiceAttack*.
* Don't set Boost as a voice attack command as it may not end well.
But yea, I hope X4 has better support for HOTAS.. To me, playing X4 with a game pad is like playing Star Citizen with a game pad... why you want to take away the immersion of 'feeling' like you are in a cockpit using actual controls, is beyond me..
I know, I know, some of you do... That's fine, you do your thing.. I just want to ALSO do mine.
