Not currently in game, so doing this from memory, but:
Universal = drone parts, smart chips, energy cells (this is the typical non-Terran build path)
Terran = metallic microlattice, silicon carbide, energy cells (this is Terran tech)
Closed loop = claytronics, hull parts, energy cells (this is ToA recycle tech)
Keep in mind if you change that setting, it will also change what materials station construction and ship building uses on that station. The default method can also be changed on the player global settings panel, iirc (the panel that lets you set blacklists and such).
I made t hat big mistake, just because I started Terran cadet I thought I should set building method to Terran. Yeah good luck with that since you're stranded in Teldari space for quite a while. No terran mats around for love or money. Glad I figured it out relatively early and set it back to universal haha.
