I'm fairly new, I don't really understand how to make money in this game or how to pick up missions. Tips?
You'll need to find sectors where the miner can mine and sell in the same location. There are several throughout the Terran sectors. Also, the Grand Exchange is a great place for mining and trading because it has 3 smaller sectors in one and the miners and traders will go between them, meaning there's a lot more trading opportunities. Any other sectors like that are also good places to look around for early trading/mining opportunities.
For some other ways to make money, some easier ones is looting battlefields for loot (hold 'O' key to tractor loot in, have to be within 1km when you're in a fighter). Sell that loot at the trader - you'll pick up on what's valuable and not. Programmable Field Arrays are one of the better ones to look for.
Roaming around, looking at station for missions. Look for the yellow icons on them, look at the mission offers screen. Some of them are easy - shoot down mines/laser towers/criminal traffic. Get items from a lockbox. Some may not be possible until later or risks faction rep - boarding/killing ships. Or just not worth your time. A fair few different missions available.
Eventually you'll want miners in certain sectors (like asteroid belt or oort cloud) doing local automine for ore and silicon. And some of the gases. Just make sure there's a station in the sector that actually has in demand that material first, otherwise they'll just sit there doing nothing. Computronic Substrate Fabs is the better stations here to look for - they're resource hogs.
There's other ways like trading/looting/piracy but that should cover a fair few ways.
So actually, the devs intended some of it to be doable in your Kukri, but faction decisions can throw a really strong wrench in your face. So an "easy" mission may turn out to be difficult or even extremely difficult in a much better ship than it was designed for, just because you're playing in a "living" world.
Edit: Hey, got a screenshot of the action.

And also this. It did seem really weird. The first go into Getso Fune to do missions, around that station, I ended up not going immediatly and I went and did other stuff to make money and sell stuff, I ended having enough money to be able to buy another ship. And I came back, and there was a Antigone (I think it's called) Battleship and a number of smaller ships attacking the stations, and it blew up as I was trying to "inspect the station" for Mission Command. Then the mission restarted minutes later and a new station just up and POOFED into existence along with a bunch of Terran Ships attacking the antigone republic's ships. It was weird, and I also had a 4/5 mine bug, having to go and buy another.
Sir you are a life saver. I was pulling my hair out on this mission. Must have replayed it a dozen times before I saw this. Worked like a champ.
NECROMANCER NECROMANCER!!
Second, yeah this worked like a charm for me as well. When it was relevant...
