Missile Frigates
Just wondering, is the AI competent with missiles?

As in, if I make a M ship with frontal missile weapons of different kinds, will it decide to use the appropriate kind for each target, like interceptor missiles against fighters, then start shooting cluster missiles against stations, and when each kind runs out, will it just stop?

Or will it go bananas and shoot anything against any target and run out imetiatelly?

I was thinking of making some siege frigates with a single boson, for faster cooling, and frontal missiles+flak turrets, but I'm not sure if the AI can use these designs.

The other alternative would be to make missile turrets and only allow them to shoot at certain targets instead, but then it loses the anti fighter support coverage, and it might want to dogfight them instead, with a boson, it won't end well.

well i've never used missiles on an M but have on a large with turrets. they'll just eat through your missiles as fast as they can, it goes pretty fast. expect your ship to have to get more missiles after every battle. not sure what it uses to decide what tracking type missile to use, probably highest damage first. but it doesn't really seem to matter. I stopped using them because the results were WAY inferior to every other type of weapon. like, not even remotely close. the idea of shooting lots of missiles is cool, but in practice i found them to be the absolute worst choice of every weapon available, in every situation. they would need to have twice the range, 4x the speed and 10x the amount of missiles you can carry to even get in the ball park. at least for the light missiles. the heavy missiles are too slow for anything but station stomping and plasma is WAY better choice for that.

if you think it's cool enough to make it fun in your game, go for it. just know you are doing it for the cool factor alone.

If you get missiles, get one of the mods that buff their damage.
Makes them actually worthwhile to use and viable. But you'll still sadly be reloading them plenty often. So it's only reasonable if you establish a Missile factory close-to if not right at your Shipyard/warf so it becomes easier to manage. Auxiliary ships suck at actually helping resupply your ships unless you get a mod that increases their supply capacity as well.l
