Key things to check - do you have the right storage available, and enough spare for your incoming goods? E.g. Container vs solid. Some research requires Nividium, which is solid.
Next, if your ship has the goods on it, you want to click on your ship, right click -> Transfer wares with: Player Headquarters (not build storage). They should go to dock, and move the wares.
If your ships are assigned as Traders for the station, they should go try and pick up the goods automatically over time. Unless there's none available nearby on the market.
Are the wares hard to get like advanced electronics?
all my traders going for weapon components on a shipyard when no hull parts.
Do you have enough money in the hq, The research budget often adds a vast amount to the desired balance.
do you have both a L and a M /s ship (just in case the other station only has one dock type.
if you reassign the trader, does it change the wares list in the autotrade section.
try setting required quantity of any other goods required by the station to less that you have in stock, that might force the trader to fetch the missing item.
I don't think the logic for traders is very good at choosing the goods to buy, if you produce goods and research at the hub, often the traders only to the production side.
goods may be provided by NPC as there should be a buy order, but that may not be a great help.
try putting on a manual buy order?
1. You've started the particular research mission
2. Your HQ has all the necessary storage types (ie container and/or solid)
3. You have traders assigned as subordinates to the HQ
4. You have sufficient money allocated to the station account
5. You have up to date trade information on stations that sell the needed materials that are within range of the HQ so your manager knows where to send the traders to buy them. It may be some materials are simply in very short supply.
6. The buy price set for the needed materials is at least higher than the price NPCs are willing to sell the materials (usually not necessary to adjust this, as it is set automatically)
