What are you must have non cheaty mods?
Thinking of starting a new game after being gone a long time. what are your must have mods?

What do you consider cheaty? Everyone has a different opinion on this.

Wing hotkey - wing controls

More ship room - visual

Getting paid - paying employee an actual salary

Faster crew leveling mod - improve vanilla way of leveling pretentages to make thing like trading and mining actually level up pilot

Though I use an edited version as I feel it a bit to high so I lower the value a bit

somthing that gives free instant access to max rank personel or makes it suuuuper ez to make millinos of creds in 5 mins or somthing.

how did u eddit the faster crew leveling? i would also like to tone it down a bit.

Any / all of them marks the save as modified and / or disable steam achievements?

Mods mark as modified.

Mods don't disable achievements.

Egosoft has a tool for it in their forum.
After you log in you go to download.
In X4 below the no steam.exe is the X catalog tool.

you can use this to extract files from the cat file.
I then extract it.
Edit the value to what I want then put it right back.

So the big problem for me is that the game is easy mode. It has a lot of hints of X-Rebirth which was surprising because that was a total flop. Im sure some people liked it but it was just horrible for old X fans. So I was shocked when they incorporated a lot of the easy mode stuff to X4.

Basically the biggest problem with X4 is the arcade-like balance. Scale means nothing in vanilla and there is no strategy needed. A fighter can take out practically anything including huge destroyers and such. Its, frankly, insulting since that means you dont need to do anything in the sandbox since small fighters are very cheap and easy to get. This was a lot like X-Rebirth.

The game was not fun for me till VRO (Variety and Re-balance Overhaul). VRO restores the game to be more like the X2 or X3. It makes it so that you actually need think and do something in the sandbox to beat other factions.

VRO is not perfect, and he may have over nerfed fighters a little but honestly that just turned into a fun challenge in itself. Here is how my game progressed:

- Im in a scout small ships. I can kill other small ships but I cant even scratch a medium ship of any type and I wanted to move up. How shall I do it?
- I upgraded to a stronger small ship and tried at least a dozen different weapons.
- To get the weapons I had to get my reputation up with a faction.
- To get my reputation up I had to selective set up miners and traders in specific sectors.
- I also set up my HQ with some simple solar for energy cells and started selling that to everyone (auto trader assigned to the HQ).

Eventually I figured out a few things.

- First, ship load outs matter a lot. A small with 3 or 4 front weapons can take out a medium ship. But those ships tend to be slow and since they are small, not well equipped to deal with medium size weapons. So you have to be selective with your targets and fly very carefully.

- The better solution for me, was to use a highly shielded small craft (Teladi ships) for more defense and use the right combo of weapons. Basically one ion weapon to strip shields and a shotgun weapon for maximum hull damage. This worked much better.

- I was eventually able to capture a medium fighter! The rather infamous Minotaur Raider (pirate ship). I fell in love with this one. Its as fast as a small fighter ship but with much medium guns and shields.

- Using my new Mino, I crept up to a destroyer (large fighter) after watching it for a bit. Its guns are all located on the outside center of the ship. This ship is spherical so that means if I could creep up behind it and just tailgate the hell out of it, it may not be able to hit me... guess what? It worked. And the mino has just enough fire power to over come the large shields. I was able to take out the 3 engines making it a sitting duck. Then I took out the weapons one side at a time. Then the shield. Then when it had just 1 crew left, I sent my 10 marines and bam! The destroyer was mine.

I was addicted to capturing destroyers at that point (lol). I started scanning them for load outs and looking for where the guns are and such. Next I am going to try to capture a bigger large but im not ready for that yet. I need a way to deploy a lot of marines and ill probably lose some ships from here on so I need to improve cash flow.


I had a blast figuring out the above. In vanilla that would have never happened because there is no need for it. You can just kill everything in a cheap small ship.

+1 for VRO. Have played a lot with it & frankly the game just feels weird as heck without it now.

Also, debatably cheaty, but fly-by looting & fly-by lockbox. Fair enough, maybe the lockbox one should make you sit next to the lockbox for a while to unlock it instead of it being so instant so you're still exposed for a bit. But seriously. That nonsense lockbox mechanic is cool one time, then it is tedious as hell. Just as tedious as flying directly up to every single box to hoover it up.

Some mods I currently use.

*These work in the Documents Extensions folder*

SellSETA as I never use SETA as THAT is a cheat in itself.

More Traders (for NPCs) as their economies always seem handicapped having to rely on the player to support them.

Fixbailchance that recalculates under what conditions a pilot will bail. It is not hard to get small and even medium ship pilots to bail, but it takes a long time, ie. you have to work for that ship. It takes a long time to keep on their tail avoiding their return fire while shooting them and asking them to surrender. I use an ion blaster for this as it strips the shields but doesn't damage the hull much.

More Chaff as the vanilla amount is too low. I still get hit with missiles using chaff and I pump out several packets during fights. If I had to rely on default values I'd run out of chaff quickly and die.

Advanced satellite range. Increased range means less sats to clutter up the screen.

Lazer tower enemy fix. Sets them to shoot at the same value as ships so they don't start wars shooting at -15 rep factions flying by.

Encounters fixes how encounters work. Makes them more random and prevents ships from popping in right in front of you.

Report current status allows you to command a ship to notify you when they have completed their current commands. Useful if you send a ship off to do something and you usually forget about them until they get attacked and destroyed,

Fire and Smoke. Increases immersion when ships and sub components get destroyed.

Smooth plume makes engine exhaust look better

Kurtee friendly fire tweaks. A MUST have as it changes the conditions on stations and ships to prevent them from treating your once in a while accidental shots as being considered hostile. VERY useful when fighting xenon around THEIR stations trying to help them out.

mycu stop destroying my boarding target. A MUST have when capping enemy ships in friendly space. Depending on your faction standing, pilots attacking the ship you are boarding might agree to fly away and leave your disabled ship alone. In vig space they told me no (low rep) and kept attacking the ship i was boarding finally destroying the ship and my marines! In Argon space (my faction) they broke off attack and I was able to cap a nice SCA destroyer in Argon Prime sector.

global bounty allows you to get paid for killing Xenon in friendly space. Not a lot, but at least you get something for your time and effort. And if you kill a lot of Xenon it adds up after a while.

Scale Plate use all allows SCA to pilot a wider variety of ships. The reasoning is if they capped something they would be flying it.

JP fleet docking command to get ships docked on carriers faster.

Steambeans CraftModpartsT1 (Modified). The original version is kind of cheaty as it makes crafting all mod parts pretty easy using fairly common parts. I modified his mod to require mined crystals to craft mods with more powerful mods requiring rarer crystals . So there is a grind aspect to it that only the player can fulfill. It also makes mining crystals useful in mid and late game. Each T1 mod requires crystals PLUS mats such as motors, filters, interface units, unstable crystal, or load stones to create depending on their application. Each higher tier mod requires several lower tier mods plus interface units so in order to craft one T3 engine mod it would require 9 T1 to craft 3 T2 to craft 1 T3. In my present game only two large ships have T3 mods to boost shields and engines, and my personal corvette has mods to boost most everything. You still have to be selective on what you upgrade as it takes time and a lot of mats. This is mainly for people who USE mods and have the ventures disabled which would normally award T3 mods for doing long ventures. If desired I could upload my version to Nexus giving steambeans credit for the original concept of course.

Recycle ships and stations. Although ToA now allows us to scrap wrecks for some hull parts and Claytronics, I liked this mod as it returns a portion or more varied mats as stripping a ship should, AND it provided a chance to reverse engineer the ship/module and get the corresponding blueprint. Kind of how things would work IRL.

No Fog because I don't like the unrealistic space fog. Not everything in space is located inside a nebulae.

Double Pirates increases the rate that pirates spawn. Good for capping ships, bad for traders and miners.

Reasonable engine travel time. Reduces ship travel drive spinup time so you're not waiting 30 seconds to engage travel drive. Could be considered a cheat as it allows ships to move around faster. Since it affects all ships, friend and foe, I consider it a wash.. everyone gets to move around faster.. wheeee

mapcolors a MUST have to color different factions different colors . Makes seeing who is who much easier.

No repair drones in battle. Keeps them from being destroyed in a fight so you can have them available to repair the ship in between battles. Repair drones don't make a WHOLE lot of difference in a firefight but they make a world of difference getting your ship back to battle ready status in between fights. Repair drones will stay docked if a fight is going on but will automatically deploy once things cool down.

mrs aka mobile repair service works in conjunction with above. A medium ship is designated a repair tender that will run around like an untethered repair drone working on your or friendly NPC ships. This service is not free like repair drones, it costs credits for repairs.

I have a lot more mods I use that add in ships or allow satellites to grab all prices in a sector or allow you to buy paint jobs from traders. They are kind of cheaty but are still useful as they are QoL mods.

everything that makes the game harder, kuertee's mods are good for that.
FOCW is one of the best mods

FOCW Corporations adds more immersion and more trading opportunities.
VRO is amazing also and makes it a lot harder.

Larger fleets, so that factions actually have good fleets and protect their sectors way better.

More traders which adds 25% more trading ships to factions to help them supply a little better.

All the enhancer mods.

No highway if you using a regular game start.

Terran accelerators as it's content that egosoft forget to activate in the game which is weird lol

getting payed - which makes you actually pay your crews every hour so you can't expand like crazy have thousands of crew members and never pay them anything

Reaction force as it helps not having 50 fleets on repeat order to defend your sectors

advanced renaming is a must !

Fire and smoke makes it so much better graphically

no repair drone in battle also like the guy above ;)

I also recommend map colors ! and it's FOCW Corporations compatible
