am curious - do people pause the game while in menus...
,,,reading the encyclopedia, etc?

I am playing very slowly and quite like the feeling of the game progressing in real time. I am a little reluctant to let the game run and nerfing my playthrough and so I have been pausing.

Am I worrying too much? :D

pausing has its benefits... i frequently pause the game while planing stations and chaining orders for example.

there is nothing wrong with it as it is a valid way to make decissions without the pressure that would be in time critical situations.

also.. it entirely depends on how you want to play the game.. play it like a realtime strategy game. turn based (pause would be yout decission making turn) or mix'n'match how you feel.
I pause compulsively, and I'm okay with that. However all of the Youtubers I watch who play X4 almost never pause. Just a matter of personal preference in playstyle.
I only pause if I'm in combat or a situation where I might be attacked. This game pretty quickly becomes fairly passive in terms of progression and making money, and letting your mining ships and stations continue to work while you read something in a menu is fine IMO. I might even leave the game running when I grab something to eat, if it's only going to be like 15 minutes.
I pause the game when looking through encyclopedia stuff as well.
It nice when you can read something and not have something slap your attention away.

It also helps when hearing the time line without the background chatter.

I swear if you scan me one more time police security :steamsalty:

If I'm in a larger, slower ship, i typically just chill and let the AI fly me to a destination. I organize trade deals in the map, plan stations, etc. Then I hop into a S/M ship to do some missions. Return to the 'base' ship once I've finished up.

I wish they'd install an "office" that you can decorate with stuff you gain from missions (not as main rewards, just extra stuff added on). I'd love to play as a trader, with my office based on a Large Trader that I command from my desk. I also read books, watch YT and just chill in this game. Occasionally I pop out to capture some L pirate ships. Decorate the office with Teladi art.

Also, getting visitors to your L ship would be cool as hell. "Excuse me, President BenArgo, there is a communication from a Paranid energy transport requesting a meeting. Your schedule is free. Would you like me to approve his docking?" You approve, the ship slows down, the S/M ship docks. The trade agent enters the office and we do a quick conversation. Maybe he wants to offer us some discount energy cells as he's in a rush to get out of this sector. Maybe he's looking to sell his ship and retire. It would be AWESOME to have these little moments to make things feel more alive.

"Pardon the interruption, President, but the local police authority has sent an urgent request that we clear out several small pirate ship in this sector. Their patrol craft were damaged recently and would appreciate the assist."
The pause feature, just like any other potential feature in any game, is there to be used as desired. It is not a matter of somebody else telling you they think it is good or bad to use it.

Playing the way you desire to is precisely one of the strong points of this game.
Remember: This game is exclusively singleplayer, you are not hurting anyone by pausing. 😅

You should always pause, fps double and xenon hold back. I have it on middle Mouse button.

I only ever pause when theres an actual risk. Otherwise it just makes sense to keep the economy running in the background.
I pause either when I have to handle something time critical, like pirate harassment, or if I'm going to be busy for a while, like station planning. Otherwise, let it roll, baby, roll. Every minute brings new opportunity.
I didn't even know there was a pause feature =)))
But I would not pause anyway. First, you got to deal with challenges in real time. Also, terraforming takes a lot of time, so I am trying to maximise the active run of the game. Sometimes I even read encyclopedia while using SETA.
I frequently use pause in combat/pre-combat to look at tactical cameras, check statuses and execute movements. And it may be crucial to spot incoming enemy in time., because travel drives happen. You don't want enemy destroyer to jump on your roof out of blue.
It may be seconds for you to respond in time, if things are goind to leave rails, so pause is pretty handy.
Out of combat tactical pause is not really necessary unless you are purist.

That reminds me. Pausing to aim and fire individual torpedo launchers at specific surface elements of capital ships. This is something everyone should do.
I use pausing a lot, when you scan a ship it's easier to pause the game hit scan and then disable fly assist so you can unpause and keep aiming at the ship.
Pause in battles also, or while reading encyclopedia, building my stations etc....

I never pause and have Seta on when afk.
Usually because I am building or to generate trade income and gain rep.

I’m waiting for income 95 percent of the time in this game so I never pause
