Saves missing *solved, kinda*

Solved, but keeping this for any reference for other people,

DEV SUGGESTION: Disable Cloudsave

you have two save locations,

game saves to: B:\User Files\Documents\Egosoft\X4\USERID\save

but there is also a weird backup location in where ever you installed the game;

G:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\X4 Foundations\save;

^ This one does not update on save or a new game, so can only assume it's something to do with cloudsaving backups. But it contained my Saves when they went missing.


Also I think perhaps 'Windows defender' blocked access to the file, save/load. So it might be worth to add the directory / game app into your exclusions within the 'Exclusions' menu in Defender

Hey all,

Did anyone else just have their saves vanish/deleted.

I've just launched the game after 10+ hours of gameplay and greeted with no Saves, just 'New game' only.

I've checked the steamcloud and it says 0kb and the 'documents/id/saves' just contains the 'steam_autocloud.vdf' file.

This is pretty annoying if steam just ate them, had no crashes or any issues when I saved and quit last.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Keep looking for them. I have seen them vanish and re-appear in the past. However, I often back up my saves manually for such emergencies. I suspect sometimes it happens when there are changes on a Steam server that has yet to roll out on another.

I did just locate there is another save file within the gamedirectory /steamapps/ itselfs,

It contains my saves, will now Save a new game and see which directory Updates.

vs
steamapps

So the original Empty Mydocs updated now with the new save, So i've copied the saves from /myapps/ to mydocuments and it's all back to normal

this might seem counter intuitive.. but i want to encourage you to disable the steam cloud for X4... the files tend to get really big over time and cloud will have trouble syncronizing them... thats what eventually happened to your saves in the first place.

steam was not able to keep up or complete the download in time... copy the saves into your documents folder... let your AV verify them (can also corrupt and mark them as modified, fyi).

so.. as said.. i recomment to disable cloud for X4.

I didn't till this week for some reason my save stall at 48% loading and if i wait for up to 10 minutes or more the load will restart then stall again at 86% loading so another long wait i will finely get into the game.

This dose happen with all saves even a new game start i get the same stalls at the same percentages.

this sounds like a typical access problem... make sure the game has the rights to actually read and write into the documents/egosoft/x4/save folder
