Main thing is to not overdo it on the speed. S/M docks slow your ship's max' speed but some of their slowing fields are very small so they leave little room for correction if you hurtle into them. And don't race up to a pad with SETA engaged unless you know what you're doing.
I actually prefer X4's take on docking, I think X3's was utter garbage (total waste of time if you factor in the sort of space landing strips, and how ridiculously far from the landing spot they actually start you on autopilot). They've managed to find a nice middle-ground between simplicity and still having to initiate docking in some way yourself. Having maybe like a MK3 computer start the docking procedure for you upon entering the slowing field would be nice but I don't think it's necessary.
With the docking computer all it takes is for you to move towards the green dock and the ship will land on it own, if you can't even do that I don't know what to tell you lol maybe change your hands or something or yeah ask a pilot to dock for you...
1. get docking computer
2. aim crosshairs at the landing pad with the green hologram
3. boost
Even if you glitch into the station the docking computer will just rubberband you back out and place you on the pad properly, so as long as your aim is good going slow isn't necessary.
It is not the process of docking I am complaining about it is that you have to do it all. This should be all auto pilot on SETA stuff. What is this? Battlestar Galactica? Why not have us have to go turn a crank to put our landing gear down too? Can make a whole minigame out of it.
Are you sure you played X3? Waste of time? you moused over the station and selected dock and turned on SETA. It might have took 30 seconds to dock. Once you got the docking computer it was instant after jumping to the station. You got to focus on imporatant stuff and let the computer handle the boring stuff.
Autopilot on SETA xD yeah try that I'm sure you will have a lot of success :')
Nah man you actually have to dock here, and SETA is absolutely not recommanded except if you are in a sector with very low activity.
Crazy !! Basically Complaining you are too lazy to fly to the dock of the station, I mean if you press schift+D it will show you the path to the docking module if you are too blind to find it.
Docking takes like 5 seconds with a docking software.
Docking manually is very easy. It's only difficult if you insist on not using the computers and avoiding wherever your assigned pad is. I don't know why you seem to imply otherwise but it's a git gud scenario.
Let's be clear about this: the autopilot and AI flight otherwise is still one of the worst aspects of X4. It's just worse in X3. It's inconsistent and prone to failure in both games but contingencies against that are better in X4 as far as I've seen.
Despite all that I DO agree with you about automating it more. If I could just switch on autopilot and have that dock me even as a captain would then that's cool—cuts out any set-up time after all. The point was that docking is so trivial in the end for minimal cost that there's not much use-case for it, at least I'd say so.
I realise nobody answered the OP title so I guess the answer is no. Nothing on Nexus and nothing on the workshop. I guess theoretically you could extend the autopilot to dock but I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. If you find a way, I'd appreciate a mod'. :P
As to the OP, you basically need to learn what a docking pad looks like. Then you can pretty much see it while your approaching and adjust accordingly.
Otherwise, just have an NPC pilot on the ship and order them around.
It is OK to be the odd duck who cannot manage one particular aspect of flying. You are not the only one. There are many like you out there...mummified... drifting through space...
Mister, I dock manually with an imperial cutter without shield to maximise profits.
No, I'm not a hardcore slot hoarder, I just have teladi blood. (plus docking computers use a tech slot, use some powerplant power and have a queue to dock. It's quicker to dock manually.)
The real challenge is finding the freaking dock on small stations.

# Easy to install.
+ Select any station anywhere in the universe, press 2 keys and you instant dock to it.

+ When you are near a station, select it and display the interaction menu. Select "Dock" and an ""autopilot"" will transition you smoothly from where you are to the landing pad in a few seconds.
Thanks, that is how it should be. I am actually already using the bottom link. I didn't find it at first on Nexus because I was just searching for docking mods. I haven't looked at the top one...might be fun after I've played the game out some.
But holy cow at the idiot elites in here thinking they are special because they can dock. It is not hard...it takes no special skill. It is just a worthless time sink. Well...have fun living in 1995 while the rest of us automate boring stuff.
