Removing Fog of War
So I'll quickly start this out by noting that I know about the mod that increases satellite range, but im more interested in finding out the vanilla methods.

I mostly want to be able to see into a select few systems to find enemy fleets without having to send in scouts that end up getting destroyed.

Easy peasy. It's done with a combination of two things.
First you put satellites in the system's entries (Gates/Accelerators) and in places where the enemy strikes (Defence Stations, Shipyards, Wharfs, Equipment Docks and Trade Stations).
Then you make a custom warning about enemy L and XL presence.

I had previously considered the use of satellites in a similar way, but I assumed the enemy would destroy them and I'd have to spend time replacing them.

The custom warnings however, that's an awesome feature I had no idea existed. (I may be going of a work it out or ask questions learning method over tutorials... I know it's a bad idea.)

the ennemy doesn't seem to destroy satellites, not like in x3 where they would hunt them down, in x4 I dropp sats right at the exit of a gate and no one ever destroyed any of them

I see! well, thank you both very much!

I seem to recall that when X4 was released they did destroy satellites but now they do not, or at least very rarely, possibly only accidentally.

I sat up enemy sectors with advanced sats as this requires only about half a dozen or so for the average sector. I do it myself since you do have to be a bit clever about avoiding enemy ships sometimes.

Enemy fleets seem to always congregate around the gates and stations, especially defence stations, shipyards and wharfs. Once you got all of those covered you are pretty much good to go for enemy fleet monitoring. When they patrol they seem to head from one station/gate to another.

I loose lots of sats all the time - I believe to Xenons.. So I guess it dependes who the enemy is.. (I play Beta)

I've had complete Xenon sectors satted up for 10's of hours and haven't lost one.

on the subject of accidental things, resource probes actually do provide limited satellite coverage, as i found when a K bumped into one i left in a Xenon sector. 50m i guess.

On topic, i've never lost a satellite to anything, and i have them on the Xenon side of all gates into Xenon space as a pre-emptive warning (combined with alerts) that K's and I's are incoming.

I've also had one at this Teladi station, which has been under siege for about 300 hours and counting. Teladi trade stations are effectively indestructable as they dont appear to need builder ships to build, so as soon as something gets blown up it immediately starts rebuilding. The defense station is a new addition, about 50 hours ago.

If ever Xenon were going to destroy a satellite, this would be the place. There's about 200-300 Xenon ships on screen there (and more patrolling the sector).

I had the same probleme, I went in there and blew up the building storage, all containers, they were a lot of them and I only could shoot down one or two before having to escape because of all the xenons, took a while but once I shoot all the containers down the station blew up...

ah ok, so the station is feeding off the resources in the build storage that those suicide traders (can see one amongst them) keep depositing.

I'm saving those Xenon for an epic battle at this point, just waiting on all my S ships to be build then will see if can crash the game lol

That will depend on your computer I recommend to open the window if you live somewhere cold

where do u set that option for custom warning?
Inkarnus Feb 1, 2021 @ 2:56pm
these warnings can lag the game so be carefull about how many sectors you use these in. Especially galaxy wide.

In Global Commands, right under the part where you set up trade rules and blacklists

If you set an alert for every ship size for every faction with as many jingles as you can, maybe.

If you set it like a normal alert that isn't going to go off 20 times a second then it wont have any performance impact.

Also, dont forget to click "confirm" once you've created or edited a blacklist. common mistake.
