No I mean the Yaki fighter ship you get like 2 for free from quests and you van buy them at the yaki station. With argon travel speed engines they can go to almost 10k travel speed. I use them for scouting the universe.
Just to clarify the Syn is not a battleship, it's a destroyer. (Though it is the heaviest destroyer in the game currently.) There are only two battleships in the game currently, and that is the Xenon I that you mentioned, and the new Terran Asgard. Battleships are on a whole other level compared to destroyers. XL shields, WAY more guns, (2-5x times as many depending on which is being compared) and the Asgard has the game's first superweapon that outright instantly deletes everything but a raptor, another Asgard, or the Xenon I battleship. And will cripple even one of those. Also battleships are physically MUCH larger than destroyers.
Just wanted to prevent future confusion when you throw the word battleship around and people look at you confused.
Split has the Dragon and Dragon Raider, which both can pretty much do the same thing. Argon has several heavy fighters which can easily function as a station delete button.
The problem isn't the ships, stations, or stats. It's the ai being so gimped. Just look at mining and how broken it still is since Version 2,6, I believe. There's a couple mods out that try to correct this and improve the ai in general. Make it too aggressive and the Xenon get deleted in just a couple game days.
As for an actual fighter, the Asp is my favorite player ship. It's such a lovely sight when you have about 50 of these guys with Neutron Gatlings. An absolute hornets nest, even if they kind of suck.
In truth, I used to use fighters as a chaff. Literally just cannon fodder and missile bait as my destroyers killed everything from range. The Eclipse and Buzzard Sentinels were pretty much my go to's (added bonus I could load them with torpedoes for fast station delete buttons).
Now, I just fly the Asgard and watch the ai derp itself into the giant death beam. That, or I pilot my Katana or Jian and watch the Asgard murder the ♥♥♥♥ out everything. There's like 80 Gladius that rarely need to be used aside from keeping fighters busy until the 2 Asgards clean house.
Same applies to most of the heavier fighters.
Also the best stat for survival in an S-sized ship is speed since their shields regen to full after not being hit for a few seconds. With PAR shields and mods you can get that time below 4 seconds which is easy to get when you fly something fast.
3 S-sized shield gens won't let you tank capital ship weapons any more than 1 will so having more shield generators on an S ship is worth a lot less than you'd think at first glance.
As for ships that are actually fun to fly look at the 2 weapon fighters - you can make up for the lack of gun somewhat with weapon mods, but you can never get one of the slower fighters to be half as nimble and fun to fly as the interceptors.
With engine/drag mods some of them actually strafe faster than the slower fighters fly.
But the best option is still to just try them out for yourself. There aren't that many ships.
If you don't like one just sell it and use the money to try out a different one until you find something you're happy with.
As a fleet ship I mainly use the Aspis. 3 weapons, cheap and suprisingly durable due to it's speed and size. 40 with 3 x Thermo are enough to take down a Xenon I.
Best N is a DPS/speed category pulsar, speed/DPS - chimera, evasion/DPS Asp Raider,
fastest, best N Pegasus, Moreya, balanced one - Takoba
Tanks-ships N - first place Kalis, Ares, Gladius, Eclipse
nice ship model - Theseus Vanguard
Best M -firs place - Katana and all TER and Spilits, Yaki Kuraokami,
All ships with 4+ main weapons, or 3 shields and loot of turrets, and not bad accelerations, and speed
Of course all ships in Vanguard variants.
