What's the point of Gunboats?

Like why would you even pick one over a frigate?

I've never seen turrets on an M ship kill anything not even a scout. They also have less armor than a frigate... im just trying to figure out their use.

My gunships are better at taking out S ships then my frigates and that is just because those extra turrets. The frigates though do a way better job vs M targets because of the more none turret based weapons. That is when both are controlled by AI.

Though a turret does indeed worse then the normal guns on an S fighter and 1-2 fighters is in a lot of cases better then 1 gunship.

Gunboats, as the Name suggests, are specialized for mounting many weapons.

I actually do plan to buy a handful of gunboats to escort my Syn Destroyer. I'll leave the corvettes to escort the trade ships

Gunboat especially terran are fantastic anti-fighter

Gunboats are great for docking on big ships to add an extra 4 - 12 turrets as they will still fire even when docked.

give em torpedos /plasma as main weapons , the best shield and manevering and some fast fireing/tracking weapons as turrets than make a fleet of 20 and look waht is happen against capitals/ stations

Say I want to use a terran gunboat as an anti S (fighter) what lasers would I use for the turrets?

Beam or Flak. You could use pulse or bolt to pack a bigger punch but they won't hit as much.

AI isn't super great with frontal weapons, at least if they have to hit S sized/fast moving targets, so gunboats are decent choice as anti-fighter support for bigger ships (beams or flak). Also what Iratus said about docking them.

Argon and Splits sell them. Encyclopedia only shows stuff you've actually 'seen' (as in, equipped on a ship, even if it's just in the buy menu)

Hmm I just checked Antigone wharf and I cant see any there im guessing I have to specifically go to argon itself?
