I gave my life to X3 TC over 10 years ago and was thrilled to jump into X4. Plodding around glorious visuals with a strong 60 fps. Early into my Cadet start there is a bit of fight going on I need to help out and the FPS tanks to 25 / 35 which is a serious jolt.

2160p High

1080p low

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1m78T_J-3M

Replayed the battle a few times lowering the settings significantly, even going as far as turning everything off and dropping down to 1080P without any success. For those who have played many hours, is this as bad as it gets? Will I notice the FPS as I fly larger ships? Are there much larger and more complex engagements / industrial complexes ahead me and [performance may drop further.

NB. It is important to note I am not demanding that I should get 60 fps, it's a unique and complex game. What I want to know is about other peoples experiences.

It looks like you got the same Gcard as me, and I don't have any problems with performance in this game at all. So you should be safe on the graphics card end.

Since X4 is more on the CPU side, you won't have much lag, except when you reach like 200+ ships fighting at the same time
Mr.Freud Mar 22, 2021 @ 7:28am
25-30 fps in big battles is about right, no matter what hardware you trow at it. Perfromance is still limited to 2 CPU cores which do rendering and calculations.

Unfortunately, you won't have better result even by using a Quantum computer.

The game engine albeit letting you waging war with a lot of ships, can't handle them smoothly.

The game can handle a dozen of ships quite well but rapidely looses its steam when 20+ ships + projectiles + asteroids + station come into play.

FYI, after hours and hours of testing here is the graphic settings I come up with as a compromise between graphic fidelity/FPS (RTX 2060, I7 6700K)

My specs are similar to yours just a little under with a 1070. I get 20-30 fps also in large battles and the PHQ mega self sufficient complex. It sucks because for me end game massive fleet management is what makes the X series great.
Axeface Mar 22, 2021 @ 10:11am
Low fps in battles in inevitable, I have literally not seen ANYONE play this game and get good fps in a large battle.
HCGxKaLiBeR Mar 22, 2021 @ 10:19am
Similar to what you have. Every setting on highest (Except AA is on FXAA)

In sector single ship idle: 40 - 70 FPS
In sector muti cap ship, stations, countless drones fight: 30 - 40 FPS

Worst is map view. Doesn't matter where you are. 10 - 20 with SETA. 20 - 30 normal.

Maybe its just me, but when I restart the game it generally gets me good fps for a while. Can get decent FPS in fleet fights as well by doing this, but it does require restarting the game. Its worth it though as I like good fps as well.

I've also noticed theres literally 0 FPS increase by changing my resolution - However the HUD will bug out when running on 4k with blinking/disappearing meters and the AI also feels like it doesn't work as well with more bugs and sometimes broken missions.

X4 is just "one of those games" in fact I've been playing X series since X2: The Threat, performance issues were always a problem. Not that this is an excuse however, I don't think the Devs deserve the hate I am sure they try their best to optimize but with such a huge simulated universe with so many variables it is inevitable I suppose. I'm no games designer so what do I know. My Rig can run Red Dead Redemption on a decent fps 40-60 with all settings on ultra 95% of the time but this game just melts my PC.

They tried to attack these issues in Rebirth but the internet splurged at them violently (less, but bigger and more impressive capitals, massive freighters, few fighters, drones. More realistic). People apparently wanted the status quo of space carriers (lol) and massive bloat, hundreds of fighters (lol) and awful lag just like x3 (I didnt).
X4 might have looked something like the expanse if they had held their ground. But w/e.

Honestly I can forgive and understand the low fps in big battle.

But, I'm having a hard time with the AI; after 2 years of updates, I've just tried today another battle with 6 Behemots against one Xenon I. (FPS was good)

1 leader (5 subordinates set to mimic the leader) I gave the leader the attack order.
They began to move in formation (great) in direction to the I who is moving toward them.
They stopped at around 8-10 km and half of them began to shoot (the other half was too far 11 km+ and they never tried to move toward the I)

Suddenly all of them (as usual) spined around and turn 180° showing their engines to the I and putting their main gun the other way instead of facing the enemy!!! Shooting the I with only their L turrets.

They died one after the other, staying in this pitiful position. (all captains were 3 or 4 stars)

2 years I have waited since the release, for what? for that atrocious moment of total imcompetence...:steamdeadpan:

What kind of ships and weapons were you using? L class?
Tiny Pocket Ninja Mar 22, 2021 @ 2:10pm
@Min: Behemot capital ship L size with Large pulse half of them and Large Plasma the other half.

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/x4-foundations/images/1/1b/Behemot_Vanguard.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/310?cb=20200212194651

I did the battle a third time, same behavior.
But I think I may understand what is happening:

By studying their rotation It seems that they try to predict the next position of the I.
But they do it too soon and too quickly. And if the I change its course, they do not recalculate the next position... just food for thought...
