X4 comparatively only lacks in the combat area but that is subjective ... and by that i simply mean that its not as visceral as ED but that doesn't mean its not fun and worthwhile.
X4 does however drastically change the SCOPE of combat .... it focuses its efforts on making you an Admiral less a Pilot - in short X4 has you building FLEETS and the new update gives you much greater control of how those fleets operate.
Outside of Combat and taking ED as the first comparison - nothing close. Where ED considers its end game is where X4 says "i am just warming up"
ED has you going through vast empty systems of nothing and nothing to do with no real life or dynamics to find the odd pretty station - X4 comparatively puts more stations than you have ever seen in your whole time playing ED into 1 single system, teems it with life and AI and says "hold my beer" while it flexes itself and makes THE ENTIRE economy dynamic and simulated - nothing is artificial - when you start a game of X its like hitting the unpause button - every single ship, station, freighter, cap - they all start their routinse and jobs and this is what sets the X games apart from the competition.
Dynamic economy - every thing is simulated. this means player intervention is not artificial it really matters, and piracy is a real option. You wanna pick a race and blockade them? go for it ... you wanna go pirate and blow up supply freighters to raise price demands? go for it ... you wanna flood the market with you stock and crash prices so that you can buy up the galaxy and become Disney 2.0 ??? go for it.
Every single unit of resource/commodity has been supplied or demanded by a station in the game and it is en-course to be supplied.
As for NMS? There is no planetary gameplay - it is strictly in space and orbit HOWEVER there IS building on a vastly more industrious and fluid level than NMS ... you build an HQ that is unique in both function and form so that is your "Base" element but you also build an empire ... think real estate in space ... you exploit natural resources and you create "man made" ones ... and when you factor that into the dynamic economy and the living breathing universe the game presents -
You quickly realise why X players will never be able to say there is any comparison between the titles you mention.
Honestly the CLOSEST thing to X that you can buy on Steam is Avorion.
While in X4 you can build your own space stations and customize them. You can set foot on stations but never on a planet. You can have your own mining ships, become a trade Tycoon with multiple trade vessels. Fight the Xenon menace (aliens) with a big fleet. This doesn't happen as a single player in Elite Dangerous.
Plus nearly all content in X4 is singleplayer and you can mod it if you want to, which also adds to the game.
I think other people have more things to add :)
You can just get a capital ship and ascend to semi godhood if that's what you mean. Otherwise, If you're good enough at the combat you should be fine in pretty much whatever it is playable as a lone wolf just not very efficient

Except it's a poor simulation of a very artificial economy. There is only one product: ships. And the ships are only needed for conflict. Yes you need the same resources to build stations of various kinds but those stations are still only to produce parts for...ships. So trying to portray it as a deep and complex economic simulation is ridiculous.
1. Interface is MUCH better in X4. Because it uses a mouse, right-click, and windows. I've just hated the joystick-oriented interface in ED, especially the map...
2. Controls. In ED, you need at least some kind of stick. X4 plays just fine with keyboard and mouse.
3. X4 has a lot of automation, even for your own piloted ship. Trading, docking, traveling, even exploration - you can give an order to your ship and it will do stuff, with some degree of efficiency. In ED you have to do everything by hand.
4. Everything in X4 is faster. While it's still quite a long and slow game that can take hundreds of hours, it's nothing compared to ED which will take literally thousands of hours, because everything is slowed down artificially - even travel from one system to a nearby one is a big deal for several minutes.
5. Content. X4 has it.
6. The game's future. Egosoft works exclusively on X4. Frontiers work on many games, and Elite is not their main project (they were disappointed by its sales).
7. X4 is a singleplayer, ED is an MMO. Which, frankly speaking, means that the former is designed for playing and the latter - for the grind.
That's my reason for choosing X4 over ED. From the piloting point of view, without mentioning how X4 can be a strategy game or tycoon sim.
What I do miss is planetary landing. But contrary to ED, it has station and ship walking. And if planets are concerned, Evochron Legacy has it better than ED anyway.
While I understand that Big Ships is the goal, my impression is that Big Ship fighting has some mileage left to go to or not? I have a few hours to decide.
NMS is an excellent game but does not really scratch the same needs that X does, nor the same as ED does. At some point I would like one game that scratches all ;).
X is more a lightweight, single player Eve online
