Quite simply x games are more fantasy! Space engineers is based on realism
X4 is grand strategy with strong economy and space (fleet) combat.
Space Enigineers is a survival builder with heavy emphasis on elaborate building.
Play X4 if you want to be a single particle in a large economic simulation IN SPACE, and have space adventures working your way up.
Play Empyrion if you want to make your own space ships from blocks and have space adventures exploring the galaxy.
Play Space Engineers if you want to drive around a planet using ice for fuel until you hit a tree wrong and explode.
X4 feels unfinished and unpolished with how broken parts of it is, but it's still got more going on for gameplay mechanics.
I tried playing Space Engineers for about five minutes before stopping.
Look at my hours on X4 and make your own choice.
Space engineers is more about building your ships station and physics to play around your creation and pray to God Clang to not mess you creation
Space engineers is more fun with more people to play around solo it is boring as hell if you don't love creating stuff
do you wanna be architect of spaceships? (architect, not engineer!) - then go into space engineers
do you prefer space where is something to do (but only singleplayer), where you can create space empire - thne go into X4
as person who has over 300h in SE and played it since prerelese day, go into X4. In SE isn't mutch to do exept desiging ships and maybe some smaller dogfights in multiplayer if you some friends to play with
(maybe, if you want game like space engineers (where you can build your own craft, check stormworks - it has no weapons (YET !) but this game really has some sort of engineering, and there is more things to do (yeah, and no space :( )
X4 you are a faction in a dynamic world. You hire NPCs that fly your many ships, you build station complexes, it eventually becomes more strategic as you sit around on a bridge somewhere giving orders to countless ships around the galaxy as you wage war and take over enemy space or expand your trade empire.
