If you are here for the Lore, play all of them regardless... and eventually read all the available official Books that exist.
Anyway, none of the Games is comparable, they all are X Games with their own pros and cons.
Maybe they expand the team by someone who knows how gui´s should look before they develop it
I do think X4 has surpassed X3 in many of the factors that were on my X3 wish-list. Things like ship upgradability; destructible surface elements; modular ship design.
Apart from learning the lore I suspect you will not enjoy the earlier games unless you can sink a few thousand hours into them.
I even still play X2 from time to time because it has such a unique, relaxed feel and the graphics have ages suprisingly well i think, giving it a "natural retro" freel.
Every X is a product of its time and you can pretty much experience a bit of gaming history with each iteration and how gameplay developed overall
I still have to beat X-BTF someday.
The X3-series has been the main title for over 10 years so naturally many people are very stuck to it, including me. But right now i feel like X4 is the superior one in many, many aspects. The only big things i feel like are still better in X3 is the size of the galaxy, X4 still feels a little small, but it will grow in the coming years with expansions.
And combat. X4 combat is just so boring. The weapons are rather bland and visually the fights are rather unimpressive. And then there is the sometimes very frustrating piloting AI.
At least the VRO mod can somewhat fix the first two combat issues.
You get a badass mega-ship that's easily the best in the galaxy, it has an actual story, you could build your ships out of modules to do whatever you need, and everything feels properly HUGE in space. There's some dumb stuff there as well like having to do that freakin' mini-game a billion times to get trade deals going - but overall it was the best one from x2 until now.
Come to think of it, X2 is the only one i ever actually "finished".
I love X4 the most, because I am also addicted to strategy games (Stellaris, Distant Worlds etc.) ... so X4 is for me an immersive strategy game with story and I really hope they expand X4 with DLCs even more, so maybe it could be played with friends or/and will have even more strategy elements (Diplomacy, better army behavior, real frontlines) ...
looking forward how everything develops
The last X3 has added a lot of content that make it better, but then they chose to make an experiment with the relations and notoriety that make the game unplayable for me.
X4 is growing on me now, The worst with difference Rebirth.
I didn't like X2 and so I gave X3 a miss.
I returned to the X universe with X4 and I enjoyed the hell out of the first year, but after 10 playthroughs, I felt a little burned out lol and so I haven't really played again since the Split expansion. I will return again eventually, but that will most likely be towards the end of X4's development ;)
For my money, X4 is the best of the franchise so far... I just wish it was more challenging and not so easy to play.
though i do wis htehre was a way to combine all the x3 games together though i get there all about different things
* Egoshooter, Character Controls and Body Survival from SCUM
* Planets acessability from Empyrion
* Creative Options (own bases own ships...) thats a hard question, so no idea, but no 2x2x2m blocks from empyrion. It would need to be better
* The Strategical and economical options from X4
For such a game i would pay 200€
Ohh and to make it perfect, Quests with voiced actors like in mass effect
X4 is so good, though, that I haven't even given mods any serious thought yet, even though I'm closing in on 400 hours!
im debating between playing TC or AP
well... for AP it is mandatory to have TC... as AP is technically only an addon that requires TC to be played.
I know I was playing X2, X3TC and X:Rebith more or less concurrently until X4 came out
Now it's mainly X4 with some occassional forrays into TC
Probably still consider X3 TC the more enjoyable game although the visuals and atmosphere of X:Rebirth is probably the best since X2. But I'm putting a lot of time into X4 regardless.
X2 and X3 Reunion have useful story for establishment although the Reunion story is on-rails to a large degree. TC plays more like an X4 gamestart (many of the gamestarts also existed in the earlier games) with the campaign segmented into indivdual plot-chains.
