Once in game, is there a way to know?

You can be Human, Paranid, Teladi or Split - depending on the gamestart.
You sometimes see your character in cutscenes and if you are careful you can use external cameras to see yourself, but seeing your character isnt something you do much.

You can see yourself, but it is a bit tricky. Basically, get inside a ship, stand in the front of the cockpit, then view the ship in external view. You'll get a glimpse of yourself standing in the cockpit. There is however no 3rd person view for just the player character.

The species you play the game is is decided by the game start. Young gun starts you as a human male, Untested Explorer starts you as a human female, Unworthy Entrepreneur (unlocked as a start when you join the Teladi Trade Guild I believe) starts you as an extremely short Teladi. There is also a Paranid start where you start as an extremely tall Paranid. Plus a couple starts as Split if you have the Split DLC.

What is your concern here? The race matters less in terms of physical characteristics (you're mostly piloting your ship or manipulating things in the map). Rarely you run around stations but it isn't a big part of the game.

Was just curious of what my roll as a race was in the universe.

The game start only has a minimal impact on how your game ultimately develops.

The role of the different races reflect in their ship and loadout designs and in their relationships with other races in the game. There are two factions per race and they aren't always friendly with each other. This will impact the wars you get into as well as the sector safety and the stations accessible to your ships. It will also impact the ships you can buy as each race has their own ships with faction variations.

If you play as a teladi you're constantly staring at everyone's crotch.
