Radar Range
Anybody ever noticed that practically everything has a 40km radar range? Big stations, little stations, big ships, little ships. Long range sensors Mk1, Long range sensors Mk2.

Why bother telling us what the radar range is, if there's no difference in it? I wonder what the design choices were that lead to this? I get little images in my head of having a wing of ARG fighters tasked to me, following me in a specially fitted Cerberus or something with enhanced radar range, the mission, to sneak the Argon strike team behind Holy Order lines using my enhanced radar range to evade their sat's and patrols and of course, get them back out again after a target vessel has been destroyed.

Imagine the layer of tactics and player opportunity that could come from various ranges?
A few I can think of:
S class: up to 20km radar range with high accuracy, able to detect subsystems on contact.
M class: up to 40km radar range with poor accuracy, mostly for pirate attack early warning.
L class: up to 60km radar range with moderate accuracy, optional military or civilian radars.
XL class: up to 80km radar range with poor accuracy but the ability to provide radar findings to subordinates.

If anybody knows of any situations beyond Advanced satellites that have different radar ranges or any fun idea's on what variable ranges between ships or ship modules could bring to the game, feel free to post it here!

The Range actually is the exact Opposite... the smallest Ships, like the Discoverer, aka dedicated Scouts, have the highest Radar Range and they should be used as what they are meant for...

Then maybe my game is bugged, every ship and station has a flat 40km range to their radars. I generally also dont use ships outside of their appliable parameters? Im not sure why you would assume that of me.

I wish you still could buy better sensors for you scouting ships like x3 had triple scanner etc things that had lots bigger radar range

My reply was more a general advise for anyone who eventually would want to deploy Ships that are not meant for a certain Job (like sending a Courier on a Recon Mission) and was not pointed at you personally.

How ever, as mentioned, Scouts do have the largest Radar Bubble of all Ships.. only Advanced Satellites will beat them in Range and are worth every Credit when you want to Spy out entire Systems.

There is a ship modification that seems to expand the radar range of ships.

Alright, sorry for jumping to conclusions, im in a number of other communities where the dev's are a bit quick to accuse players of being idiots. No hard feelings.

Though I am still left with the puzzle as to my game's static radar range.

Yeah I just checked it in game right now, my fully scout equipped Discoverer Vanguard has the same range as my Magnatar (Mineral) Miner. I think something may be borked in my game.

I still thank the game should allow upgraded radar sets. A M Figate with a mission module that could take either a , jammer, big radar, shield buff ect would be cool.

Anyway the Dev is wrong, just checked all ships are 40km rnage, even scouts.

Just because the information the dev provided doesn't match what you are seeing doesn't mean he is wrong.

Are you using any mods that could be altering the default radar range?

What version of the game are you running?

Have you tried to verify your game files?

If everything is default, current, and verified, it could be a bug. There must be a reason why it is what it is.

What are the radar ranges on the ship's in your game? Im genuinely curious cause for me everything is 40km.

It would be nice if you "claimed" a sector your sector admin would have a massive range radar.
DrunkenSailor Dec 16, 2020 @ 1:57pm
I run the Argon Cyclops mod, have several other mods installed but run 'on'. I doubt any of them effect the radar range. From day 1 it has been 40km for everything, no patch notes have ever indicated a change. For god sake us autistic types need more systems to optimise, add radar modules @Devs
