I think using dual sticks is the best way to go, but I've also used a Hotas. You'll still need you kb&m for management tasks, but ya, any joystick configuration is great for flight.

I use a T-16000M and TWCS, and use it while flying, and it is very nice for that purpose. But I still have room on my desk for a mouse and keyboard, which is much better suited for the map.

Same.

I had just a joystick for X3 but having the throttle unit under your left hand and all it's buttons, levers and switches which replaces a lot of otherwise necessary kb commands in flight is a new found joy. It feels much more natural.

I would say if you got $100 left in the piggy bank it's going to make playing X4 that much better it's easily worth it.

I have all the stuff laid out in front of me in a line: throttle-kb-joystick-mouse mat. Fortunately I have a chair with arm rests so I can pivot my right elbow on it easily to use the mouse comfortably when I'm using it with the map and menus. If I didn't that might be an issue.

With the new Microsoft flight sim having just been released, Hotas prices are up.

Frankly, if $200 is too much for you to spend, a hotas isn't for you at the moment.

All good, but, you're the one who made the thread.

Yeah, Microsoft flight sim has obviously screwed the market up right now. Far as Thrustmaster 160000 nobody's got much stock. You can get one, usually it's about £100 UK. I imagine roughly the same in dollars in the US. Here's a current UK list:

If I were you, on your budget, I'd forget the throttle and get two of these:

A throttle's nice for normal aircraft, but in most space games you have 6 degrees of flight. The ability to strafe is handy, especially in smaller craft, and dodging missiles.

I still keep my throttle plugged in, but it's more for regulating speed in capital size ships.

You can find all kinds of videos on youtube discussing the benefits of dual sticks in space games.
