The best way to avoid having to micro your miners is to build a mining station. Couple of ore refineries and couple of silicon wafer fabs basically plus docks, storage etc. The station manager can easily be trained to 2* using easily obtainable seminars giving a two-gate range to all station mining and trading ships. Assign you miners to a station like this and they will mine across a wide two-sector radius area and you assign freighters to the station to ship the refined metal and silicon wafers to the many customer stations that demand it within the same area. All under the control of your station manager automatically.
a) sector miners can only operate within one sector, they must have a refinery in-sector to sell to and that refinery must actually need more ore/silicon, if it's full it won't buy.
b) refineries must have sat coverage for your miners to see them.
As I sad, generally you don't want more than one, possibly two, sector miners working for one resource type per sector or they will up the refineries very quickly and then hang around waiting for hours to sell their loads.
I haven't tried the mod to group non-fighter ships. Miners I don't normally have fighters squadron to guard them because pirates don't bother them, only Xenon. As long as you have setup global rules to stop them from travelling into enemy sectors, they are normally good.
However, I normally put the word "Mining" in front of the ship name so that they can be grouped together in the list. Just to improve quality of life.
