The reason why you feel that Autopilot is better than an AI pilot is for that standby time. There is a short delay for AI pilots in between orders where they just sit there doing litterally nothing until they move on to the next order. Flying, docking, traveling through gates, getting on and off the highway, all have delays in between them especially when IS. The Autopilot has no such delay.
The delay I only experience when docked and it can be speed up by RMB the ship and choose "proceed with current orders". There is no delay between gates or entering highways that I noticed, my pilots make good use of TD, that they disable the TD before traversing a gate is tolerable. Docking can provide "funny" stories depending on the approach and where the dock is located, but even that works most of the times.
Dont make much use of the AP, might have used it 3 times in total.
MFG
