There is no drag in space, but you do get it when going into the atmosphere shield at the landing docks.
If you look at your ship from the third-person view, you will see that the autopilot is firing the thusters to simulate atmospheric flight, because pilots without extreme training (i.e. most) have too much trouble with the real physics.
However, you can turn that autopilot function off, ...but it is not fun for most players.
Note, though, when you turn off the "Travel" drive, the autopilot is not yet active until you move the throttle controls. So have fun! 8-)
Drag reduction improves top speed as well was pitch yaw and roll (makes the ship more maneuverable).
Both together make for a generally faster and more agile ship. The effect is cumulative with engine mods.
