Pilots are leveling over time, but very - very slowly. After 300 real-life hours of gameplay my first pilot is almost 5 stars.
In fact there is no difference between 1 star pilot and 5 star pilot in combat (at least when you in the same sector). 5 star pilot trend to play kamikaze the just the same way. I guess this because it is the only way for them to do some damage. AI fighters cat miss the station at point-blank distance. They have no idea that enemy turrets need to be destroyed first - they flight straight to their fire instead.
I also have small fighters now who do appear to have improved slightly but won't go to three stars, they went from 2 to 2.75 within a couple of hours but have been at 2.75 for about 6 hours now......
I really just want them for the Auto Trade and such, you know the default assignments that require 3+ stars
Personally I prefer to level by experience however, the mod (2nd one above) does this a little to quickly for my liking, although it's better than not levelling at all, so I am now utilising this mod.
If 3.3 is one star per use on Seminars, I find that a little too easy also, I believe that pilots should be able to level a star every 3-4 hours if they are doing well. This would make levelling a pilot through on the Job learning easier for say an Auto Miner, but a fighter pilot may take longer....so use them as Auto-Miners until a higher level, then move to a fighter once high enough level.
Just my thoughts !!
Piloting in general seems a bit off in terms of experience gain. My 3* pilots all have 4-5* service crews now for example, and i used (beta 3.30) seminars to get them up to 2-3* rating.
My tactical marine squad aboard my Cobra now has two Elite marines after about 20 capital boarding operations. I recruited them at 2 1/2 stars.
Managers are doing an OK job at gaining exp as well.
I think the problem with pilots is they dont gain exp (as far as i can tell) via just flying around. Most of that goes to management.
I have 5 pilots who are at or above 3* rating, and 3 of those were given to me aboard free ships from missions. I'm honestly not sure if the other two gained it from combat or Seminars.
Miners and Traders actually do both Jobs... Flying and Trading.. means they earn Management and Piloting...
In an other Topic i mentioned that i was about to Start a new Personal Save, well.. this Save is now a little bit older than 48 InGame Hours... most of the Time i did what i think everyone is doing... Gain Access to the HQ, do the fundamental Research, Hack some Blueprints, Farm Crystals to actually Build Stuff... took me around 1 Day and a half to get the HQ into a shape that Produces Money and free Staff out of Ice.
And build a self Managing Trade Station in Pious Mists.
Anyway.. i'm here for Captain Stars.

The Top 3 Pilots are my doing their duty for about 12 Hours now, all Recruited because they were Cheap in the first place (literally Zero Star or 1/3 Star max).
They are actively Exploring the Network, System by System, for me and in their Downtime revisiting Known Stations in Grand Exchange, 18 Billion and Memory of Profit for my HQ to bring their Intermediates and Food to the TEladi that gets hungry...
I really, really, really do not know what i am doing different than others... from the looks i could turn off the Monitor, pray that those Ships don't encounter any bad Guys, and would have 3-4 Star Pilots when i get up... just from letting them on Exploration Duty.
Little Bonus... bottom right Corner are my actual FPS, while Docked and with this Infoscreen open.
Ships that were "donated" need personally hired Crew though... and as i am greedy i am certainly unwilling to pay more than 4k Cr for a nameless someone that can Fly a Ship.
May i ask were that comes from?
This is plain not true.
They complete a Task, for example Trading, and they gain Exp.
For the Trading Example, if they strike a good deal... buy min. Price Full Ship and sell max Price Full ship they even get Bonus Exp.
Other Example, aimlessly Flying around aka. Exploring, they work through their invisible Waypoints and gain Exp. for just flying... slowly but Steady.
It has to be said, the more they advance the wider the Exp. Gap between the Stars is... you may have 1-2 Star Pilots in no time but the Gap from 2 to 3 is double the ammount from 1 to 2... etc.
Also, Player NPCs can not loose Experience in their Primary Skill... but they can loose Moral when they are Idle... the combination of Primary Skill and Morale gives the Resulting Overall Skill that Unlocks Commands like AutoTrade etc.
So I can test this. About how long should it take a no star pilot to become a 1 star if they're set to only explore?
If you are willing to indeed Test it i'd say somthing around 4-5 Hours... non stop exploring.
