How do you Acquire Pilots for missions?
There's a bunch of missions in my log where they want me to "Acquire Pilots". I've googled a lot - from creating a dummy ship with a Pilot to hiring an NPC on a station and promoting him (to a captain I assume since I dont get an option to promote to anything else).
but I'm not able to go beyond this point. How do I get a Pilot in this game?

If I can get a screenshot. It sounds like it may be a move mission or picking up a certain person. Lets get some screen shots of the mission and your ship on the map overlay.

Find a pilot that has half or more stars of morale, then deliver it to the station in step 2.

yeah that was the hard part! "FIND a Pilot". Looks like I figured it out for anyone coming here googling!
1. If you are solo'ing thus far and you got this mission - you're in the same predicament as me
2. Go to any wharf and buy the cheapest ship you can find. Remember to assign pilot manually when outfitting it. Or send your crew member to this ship and promote him to captain-i didnt try the latter. Just chose a Pilot as part of outfitting!
(THIS IS YOUR PILOT! HUZZAH!)
3. Add the ship to your squad.
4. Fly to the station that wants a Pilot
5. Tell the cheap boat's pilot to dock at the same station as you
6. Once he's docked - Comm in to work here (the option will appear if he is docked at the same station where the mission requires a Pilot).

Really cumbersome and irritating quest especially considering there's no information on how to acquire a pilot

Good deal glad to hear that

You could just promote a rookie to be your relief pilot, then fly there yourself and tell him to work there. Shouldnt require a new ship, probably just requires that you're not actively piloting the ship.

Exactly, and if more pilots are needed then you go one at a time, promoting a crew member to pilot and comming it to transfer

Just did one of these myself (for a station manager).

Key point for future people is you need to bring up ship info and right click crew member and select "Comms" instead of transfer. It doesn't matter what their assignment on your ship is, only the star ratings matter.

It's quite an obscure mechanic to be honest, and could use a bit more mission guidance.

Yeah, it is indeed obscure. We do have this on our radar though, and I hope we can de-obfuscate it for 4.0.

you should also really consider changing the text from "acquire pilot" to "acquire ship with captian" because hiring an elgiable pilot for a task is VERY different than delivering a pilot with their own ship, i just accidentally gave away my starter ship after spending 40 minutes fiddling with menus trying to figure out how to deliver the eligible crewmembers i had acquired

I have no idea why this needs to be this confusing, the requirements aren't unreasonable, just the fact that the game does absolutely nothing to even give you the slightest indication of what you need to do is really problematic

Sorry for necro, but - you don't need to give away a ship. Just bring them to the station as crew members or marines (anything but captain) on your ship, then go to ship information, right click the crew member -> comms -> work here. Ship stays yours. Pretty sure this is the intended way for this to work.
