That said, since you started in Split territory I have to ask: Have you explored enough around the PHQ area? There are usually Ore Refineries in GE 1V, Two Grand and Second Contact
Almost entirely true, I seen the PHQ spawn in differnt X Y positions, but it is always in the same sector and area.
And you'll rapidly make back your investment in the miner. I think a basic M Minwr is half a million ish and it makes about 57k per ore haul, 100k per silicon. An hour of hands off play while you sort out other missions and build rep, and your miners are generating a nice chunk of cash.
You can also set up a nice satellite network in that time and give a long list of trades for a M transport to fill. Whenever you have a break and hand over flying to your backup pilot, you can hop into the map and add a few more trades to the transports list. I've set up millions of credits worth of trades and it just chugs along, filling my orders.
Unlike earlier games one thing i need to keep reminding myself of is that distance away in sectors doesnt really mean much with the super highway, unless your using L/XL ships.
interestingly in my game start my small miner (which i bought by accident really to suicide on the PHQ quest) gets ~20k for silicon and ~100k for ore. My game economy is the flip side of yours it would seem :)
