Just found a game that similar to this call Starsector. It is in 2D though, but really nice.

Been playing it for a few hours and it is only 15 bucks, but it is super worth. X series could have used images similar to this game for dock interactions that are way more immersive than what we have now in X4.

I honestly believe if Egosoft made most interactions using interactive HD images and sprites it would be more immersive than the shallow looking 3D NPCs. Plus, it prob would be cheaper and use less dev time too.

At first I didn't think it would be that good until I tried it. It is really neat game. 2D might not be for a lot of people, but I really like it so far so I just had to share.

Starsector is a gem. If you like 2D, you will love it. There is so much content, very cool combat and a lot of exploration.

There are also plenty of good mods.

I can only recommend this game. Its nearly bugfree and offers a lot, even when its developed by just a single person (over several years)!

The Mods make the game even better.
its been in development for 8 yrs and do know, it relies on Single Core CPU so AMD gets a bit of hit from it

I found out about Starsector about three months ago. As other here have said, it is an absolute gem of a game, a cracker. It's officially in early access and has been for years but it's totally stable and eminently playable. Very helpful and active community. Looking to take a short break from X4 or ED and wondering about another space game? Look no further.

Starsector is a great game and the next patch will be dope :). But its very different from X4

Star Sector is indeed a great game, absolutely amazing for the measly $15 they want for it, but as mentioned it is very different to X4. All I can say is if you've played Star Sector you will almost certainly love X4 and if you've played X4 you will almost certainly love Star Sector. Both qualify as the ultimate space junkie's space games.

I love starsector it"s an awesome game but the evolution of xR and x4 was a logical evolution from x3, having cockpits and space legs, there always needs to be evolution in video games or you end like far cry and assassin's creed at some point with the same game over and over again. now x4 evolution is not perfect (less factions, less diversity in ships and some ships are uglier...) but the core mechaniques have evolved in the right direction in my humble opinion (3D map, Cockpits, space legs, economy...) it's not perfect but they'll learn and improve.
