Although, a lot of people prefer the single player sandbox of X. It's not a "missed opportunity", it's a different type of game. To include multiplayer, the entire game has to be designed differently from the ground up, it won't be the same.
I am pretty sure your friend can be simulated with a few MD scripts that spawn random ships and force them to attack the nearest station...
Haven't tried Avorion myself yet, but I get what you're saying. It may seem like a small thing (space legs) but getting out of your fighter to run around the landing pads of your carrier, or watching the traffic around your station from the docks, really helps with the sense of scale and immersion. Is it perfect? No, but it is still pretty darn cool. :)
