Disarm your cargo drones to prevent this from happening again.
Maybe it is just bugged or incomplete
Only time drones get left behind is when I'm on the wheel and I leave my cargo drone when they decide to go out to grab loot.
Btw, it suddenly has a crown, like it had wingmen, but the only wingmen was disconnected and then sold. And i'm 100% about that because it happend before and i had to load an old safe.
if it is your personal ship it is best to not equip cargo or defence drones at all... a destroyer don't needs any of those.
i am unsure if the problem is savegame presistent... but i know that it can take ages for a stray cargo drone to return to its ship.. especially when said drone went loose some systems away.
if it was a combat drone however i would just select that damn thing and let it commit suicide on a xenon station.
other possibility... a Crew Transfer Pod.. have you recently transfered Crews to or from that Ship remotely?
It happened because I manually piloted my ship through a gate while my cargo drones were still out.
Once I got into a save sector and turned command over to the pilot, he got stuck "recalling subordinates".
Deleting the order while the AI pilot was in charge would just have it pop back in.
But taking personal command of the ship, deleting the recall order while in charge and then handing it back to the AI pilot solved the issue for me. Now my carrier is happily motoring on to where I sent it.
Find the missing cargo drones. They are travelling from an unknown sector at 58m/s to their mothership. When you find them, destroy them. They are likely listed under the ship's subordinates in the crew panel. Do not use drones to automatically collect items until this is actually fixed.
If you "sold" the drone to a shipyard, it does not matter--they are still trying to return to their mothership. It does not matter if you replaced them with repair drones in the in your bay. These cargo drones still think they are part of the ship and forcing your captain to create the "recall subordinates" order.
Chances are that your ship has been able to move from one point to another and is now stuck in a new point. This might be an indication that the cargo drones met up with their mothership and are now trying to follow it to the latest destination. So, your best bet is to retrace your steps with a scout and locate them.
Have fun.
