Is the Alligator supposed to fly this fast?
Jesus, this medium mining ship is ludicrously fast. I keep thinking that the game developers inserted a typo in when they were programming its specs. They are like a blur on the map sometimes... seems way OP. Over *twice* as fast as an Argon Drill. I mean WTF man.

I bet I could fly an Alligator around the Earth and induce time travel like in the first Superman movie. Mebbe they use an Orion nuclear bomb-powered engine in the butt.

I don't want to even build any other types of mining ships anymore. Alligators are sick.

if I remember correctly Alligators have the fastest base non boosted speed.

Pegasus still reign supreme in fastest because of travel drive and acceleration though.

ssshh.. maybe there is a chance it stays that way if you keep quiet about it. ;)

I think all the split ships make vanilla ships look like ♥♥♥♥ in comparison, just the rattlesnake is a pain in the ass, it"s great when you fly it yourself but I have 2 of them In my main fleet supported by a colossus and 6 behemoths and my 2 rattlesnakes die in almost every engagement xD
The traders and miners are just 100 times better for me, they are a lot faster and the cargo is still decent, they get the job donne far better thann any other of my transport ships...

It would be sooooo awesome if the dude that made the spli ships could remake the vanilla ships... I mean the dude made a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ killing in Split vendetta ! he made the raptor look enormous while it's still barely as big as the colossus xD all the ships look very nice, I'd even pay for a DLC that just adds new ships made by him or a remake of vanilla ships !!!!!

The Split ships have the fastest cruising speed of any ships, because the Split, have the best ship engines. One way to make your non split ship go faster, is to replace it's engines with Split ones.

Same goes for shields. The best are the Teladi shields.

I think the best turrets when it comes to range at least, are the Argon ones.

Split are something like a speedtank doctrine, instead of relying of well rounded or just pure tank. And in X4 speed tank is best tank, because turrets can't track for ♥♥♥♥ if the target has some transversal, even moving at 5m/s. IN system.

However, flying fast and relying on turrets seems to make them EVEN more inacurate.

The flipside is, speedtank counts for nothing when OOS, because weapons never miss and always use full range. Then you want the most DPS weapons and the most tank.

That said, Split are not that great when it comes to OOS combat.

Yeah, I've been buying batches of split miners and transports in split space, flying them to teladi equipmen dock for shield refits, and then flying them to argon space for mining and trading. Now I have a conveyor belt of alligators lined up outside the refinery, unloading ore as fast as they can mine it.

"Split ships vastly outperform everything else." brought this up a fair while ago.

Boa transporters and alligator miners are currently superior because the AI wants to do tiny deals and thus really fast ships are great, even if they take a slight hit to cargo space.

The only thing to decide on is if the combat MK4 split engine is the best (since then they almost never die, able to outrun threats with ease) or if you prefer trying travel engines. I personally favor combat engines and not having weapons at all.

The OOS combat for split ships can be turned in your favor quite easily as well, since as mentioned - the weapons never miss. Split has the most guns, give them the heaviest damage dealers possible and they'll wreck the opponents that come within range.

Their hull+shield is usually higher than enemies to.

The weakness is actually when fighting IS as missiles really tend to just bang away their turrets with ease. A rattlesnake can lose main guns and 8 turrets within seconds.

I don't think so. Split ships are made out of paper because of how low their shields are even if you replace them with better shields like teladi their shield value is horrible because they lack shield hardpoints. (If I remember correctly the Rattlesnake only has one shield point)

The only Split ship that doesn't follow this doctrine is the Raptor which have crazy amount of everything but is the slowest carrier ship in the game.

And dont forget the way faction standings are gained. An alligator is going to net you the fastest amount of faction. And Boa for the same reason. More trades with fuller % of the cargo. You have 6 miners doing 2, or 2 silicon 1 ice, 1 gas. and traders 2 wafers,, and 2 iron. And have them restricted to only that faction. And your going to quickly raise your standings up to 20, with practically no effort.

Yep. Split commerce and mining vessels are reputation-grinding beasts!

Raptors shielding is also subpar, but the L and XL combat ships (Rattlesnake and Raptor) have a huge amount of hull which more than makes up for that.

Since weapons are dealing the same damage to hull & shields, they are beastly in that regard.

They WILL take hull damage and be worn down where other vessels would simply recharge their shields, but a supply ship or regular repair-runs can handle that smoothly.

Fighting in sector my rattlesnake is only ever troubled by teladi destroyers covered in tracking missile turrets and I ships. OOS K's is also a danger since it also hits like a truck and outstats even the rattlesnake. But other faction ships need to outnumber them 2-3 to defeat them, usually, due to sheer difference in firepower alone.

But yes, the raptor is a snail only outrunning some of the biggest freighters.. I tried to use it as a boarding ship due to the gargantuan crew cap.

I find shield to be the king for L and XL ship ever since Egosoft made it so that they constantly regen.

The Raptor's speed is not bad if you use a drag polisher mod on the hull. It is, hands down, the best carrier. Over 100 turrets.

You can help a split combat ship by installing Teladi shields instead of the Split ones and then using a shield buff mod to increase it's count.

The draw back to the Raptor however, is the cost. And can take a while to get constructed, Every time I want to build one or a Rattlesnake. I get the message the station lacks the resources and build time will take a while. The cost once again? Mine, fully decked out with the best , 82 million credits. :P

I use the Alligator minerals as fighters as well, they can catch anything out there and with two tau accelerators they do really well at destroying S & M ships. i run them in packs of 5 or 10 and have them patrol or police in sectors .
