How to bypass the initial research mission so I can do the research
I am stuck on the race, I can barly make it to the first gate before my 1:50 is up in a ship doing 3800 m/s.
So I am looking too change the save file so I can go on with the game.

And dont just think of it as making a purchase for this one mission. This ship comes in handy when you need to get around the galaxy. Even more so once you complete the Teleport research done and you can send it to where you need to go with the pilot while you do other stuff. and then when your ready you can just TP to it

3800? You are trying to do it in a freighter or something? It's a race, you need a fast ship! I did it in a Pegasus with mk3 travel engines, you do need to fly pretty well though.

This is a little confusing - Are you talking about the research in the player HQ?

You should only need to do the basic 'starter' mission chain (you start these by scanning signal leaks around stations) and follow that quest line to get the player HQ and unlock research.

I guess the OP is talking about the part in the PHQ story missions where you have a minute to get to a specific station. I just used a Nova... used travel mode and I was at the station docking from the point in space where the mission starts in about 2-3 seconds...

I'm quite sure he is talking about the Basic Chassis Mod research missions where you have to race from a point to another point in a neighboring sector. You need a really fast ship for that, but it's doable.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

The race one is sort of dumb when you may have a lot of players playing the game who are not good at piloting a very fast ship on a timed mission. The rest of the research missions are a cake walk.

Besides, I am not sure it is even worth the effort to do. You can speed up a ship by applying the drag mod to it from the ship hull branch of the research. Which by the way is one way to mod a very fast ship even faster for the race one I guess.

Not tried it, but I have used the hull drag mod on my Split Dragon to give it a cruising speed of 742 m/s. Comes in handy if you are in a fight and your shields are down and you need to flee.

Uh....putting the cart before the horse much? :D

You need to finish the Basic Chassis Mod research - which this race mission is a part of - to even start applying chassis mods ;)

Ah, no you do not. I have all the research branches done with the exception of the engine branch part. The chassis drag mod is part of a different research tree.

I tried the race part 3 times and failed each time. The station you get for the main story quest, can be in different sectors I think. Mine is in the middle of a astriod field and trying to navigate your ship fast enough around them for the timed race, is a pain in the ass. So I gave up.

One can say I suck at piloting a ship and that would be fair assessment. lol! But my point was, if all the rest are so damn easy, why make one part too hard? There are plenty of other ways a player can make the game more challenging if they so desire.

Pegasus Vanguard from Trinity Sanctum III with mk3 travel drive. Tried this in a nemesis and was half a minute late. Pegasus finished with like 45 seconds to spare.

There is a trick, YOU HAVE TO use boost or you will never make it, even in a fast ship. Go to travel mode just as the countdown is hitting zero, then jam on boost until you hit max speed. Do not slow down at all. The instant you are out of the accelerator, repeat. I went 20 clicks past the marker and had to turn around and still made it in time. Without using boost, I could get within ten seconds, but never make it.

You don't have to lay off the travel drive as you come out of the gate either, you just have to change direction. Turn off the TD (with shift+1) without flight assisst so you keep the speed, turn towards the marker and re-engage TD. This will just change your course but preserve your top speed so you won't even slow down. I made it to the goal with like 9 seconds still on the clock, and that was one of my bad runs.

Well this ordeal was strange and buggy maybe. I have done this mission many times and never had a problem, yes I have crashed in gates and astoids but when I dont I finish and the ship have never before had to be an 8000+ m/s one.
All through my atempts spanning days and several ships the start and end point has been the same, accsept to day, to day it changed, the time was the same (1:50) but start and end was no longer the same.

So thanks to Ruges for pointing me to the fastest ship I have ever used in my 350 hours playtime.
It took me a year to get back to the game, it is still anoying as heck but much much better then a year ago.

You really don't need to use boost in a decent ship, travel mode will do. Point, shift 1, jobs done, even if you have to adjust for the odd asteroid, you should make it in time.

There are multiple tracks. If you cancel the research you can get an easier track.
