Teladi ships are slow. With auto-traders, travel speed is more of a consideration than cargo capacity, so Paranid ships, possibly with Argon engines, might be the way to go.

so basicly Travel speed > cargo i assume?

Couldn't say for purposes of vanilla - I've been using the variety and rebalance overhaul since Split Vendetta came out. They do look cool, if that helps!

I didn't think speed really mattered in X4, as the traders place the buy order and purchase the wares in reserve as soon as they start going to the station, so unlike x3 you don't have to actually race other people to trades anymore, so large slow cargospace is actually viable now.

Speed is always essential. Getting a 300,000 trade run in the time you get 2 x 160,000 get's you on top by 20,000 times how many?
Next the faster the trader the more difficult it will be to be intercepted by Pirates, Xenon etc.

True, I guess that makes sense, but at least its not anywhere near as important as it was back in X3 where slow traders were pretty worthless as they would always get beaten to good deals leaving them barely making profit, if at all
BoogieBoX Apr 6, 2020 @ 4:27pm
Yep, slow traders were quite bad in X3, especially without jump drive, as they would often net a very low profit or even a negative one. In X4, traders can reserve wares so big cargo ships are actually quite good. Essentially, for a general purpose trader, you should try to maximize its speed*cargo value, since it is directly correlated to the quantity of wares it can distribute in a given amount of time. Other than that, I personnaly use ships that have a huge cargo for specific one-time orders (construction materials for instance), and faster ships for distributing food/medicine to my stations.

My Mercury traders have had very few problems. I keep their default behavior to drop for police and run for pirates and they are pretty good at staying out of trouble. I also started dismantling a pirate factory for every incident of harassment. It did nothing to help the traders but it made me feel good and freed up a lot of space.

A good mix of speed traders and a few big traders works best for me.
Trading has a fixed price no matter how much you deliver.

2 x 1000 units in succession can be sold for 1 x 100 per unit and the second for 50 per unit
while the large freight trader can sell 2000 units at a time for 100 each.
This pays off for limited offers with high-priced items e.g. Nvidium.

Atleast i got some stuff to think about. Btw the big traders are xl/large or are you talking about the medium sizes ships?
Knightframe Apr 7, 2020 @ 5:10am
It depends on what goods are you going to trade.
Microchips and other worthy stuff -- go with FAST ships
Food and meds + other cheap stuff -- go with ship with most cargo to max the profit per run

Pirates generaly ignore ships with cheap cargo.
