Autotrader howto
In X3 we had the trader software MKIII to send off and generate profit. Where is it in X4?

Its a basic, very generic trading system extension you can get anywhere you would be able to upgrade a ship - equipment docks, wharfs and shipyards. Don't think it has any prerequisites.
Those complex, expensive and exclusive extensions from X3 are all gone. The ability to do more complex trading routines depends only on pilot skill.

Under the map>information tab for the ship there is the Default Behaviour setting. Distribute Wares is the basic trade command where the ship buys a load of the ware and then wanders around looking for places to sell and requires only 2 stars on the pilot while auto trade which makes simultaneous buy/sell decisions needs a 3 star pilot. As the pilot levels up the trading leash range increases up to 6 sectors away.

I have a 3-star pilot and he asks me to add wares when I say auto trade as default behavior. But I wouldn't know, that's his job. What did I put all those satellites all over the place for.

Want him to trade on energy cells? Waste of cargo space, if you ask me :) Anything used to build ships or stations is what you want. Not energy cells. Pick a system with a shipyard, see what the stations are buying and selling there, and tell him to trade on that.
Skip energy cells.

You can set them to trade everything but often they will make more trading only a select range of wares.

Rule of thumb: pretty much all advanced stuff is a good bet.
Don't waste time on distributing energy cells or raw materials.
