How important is research?
In my present game, I have opted not to follow the "mission story" and get the incompatibly shaped base with the totally obstructive asteroid in the middle.

As such, I don't have a grateful Boron slave researching tech for me....does this matter? How will it reflect on my game progress.

-You will not be able to steal station blueprints by hacking data leaks, that could mean paying many millions of extra credits to purchase station blueprints, and needing high rep with a given faction to buy the blueprints.
-You will not be able to mod your ships

I almost always play without doing that quest or getting a PHQ. I've never had any issues not doing the research but as Pathogenic mentioned above having the ability to teleport is nice but it isn't necessary. Still though, in one save I have 6 mega complexes building ships and I don't have any research at all completed.

Other than having to pay for blueprints, which isn't a problem when you're making a billion every few hours, and the teleport option which is helpful, there's no penalty for not doing those quests.

There is 1 penalty..... you can´t mod your ships if you didn´t research it.
Modding is a gamechanger... just compare a stock nemesis with the ones from HOP, which are modded entirely purple (more speed, less mass, more shields, more firepower, better recharge/cooling, etc pp)

Yeah, I'm understanding this now. I'd like to add a few modifications to my ships. I just don't like the actual base. I guess I could do the missions, get the base then forget it other than for research...damned shame you can't sell a base.....amazed that Egosoft never thought of it !

You can do what I do, and ignore the fact that you get this station, other than using it for research, and a place to store your inventory items (I forgot this is another point to getting the HQ, it can act as inventory storage).

Just have this HQ with nothing more than a dock, and build your others stations wherever you please.

Yeah...this is pretty much where I'm going with this. Would be great if this game had the facility to buy and sell whole stations.
