If you notice if you stand on the bridge of your miners they run into more asteroid than they mine. Medium ships will take damage. But all of my miners are mining outside of my view and they never take damage yet I know they are running into asteroids. So while the game might 'know' about the asteroids' location it does not perform collision testing unless they are near the player.
The only place the world needs to look and act semi-realistic is near the player. Beyond that you can fake it with data.
Or one can just order the co pilot to fly it out, since they ignore collision.
I prefer the shooting solution.
