Overall there is no "The best"...
Paranide ships tend to be faster with more firepower, but less shields and cargo.
Argon have "good" stats overall but are never the best in something.
Teladi have amazing shields but lack firepower...
Mix a Paranide Ship, with Argon Engiens and Teladi Shields - best result for most situations.
My go to is the Medium Nemesis
Argon heavy fighters have the most weapon mounts. 4, or 6 if you go for the Pulsar in particular (weak hull though, watch out for that). Even the argon scout has 2 guns, and they have a gimmick courier variant with 2 guns.
Everyone else have 2-3 weapon monts on their fighters tops.
Paranid fighters are the fastest. But they can end up costing more even for a "cheap" setup. The 2 gun fighter needs to pay for 3 engines for example. But it's faster than anyone else's SCOUTS.
Teladi get more shield slots. No paranid fighter gets 2 shields. Only one ARG fighter gets 2 shields. Most teladi ships get 2 shields. And their basic fighter is the fastest non paranid fighter that doesn't have a defense flaw (the Argon basic 2 gun fighter is as fast, but only has 1 shield).
If your concern is "Immersive space sim" then the Teladi ships also have far more legroom on average in their fighter cabins.
You could probably fit the outside of the basic paranid fighter cockpit on the inside of of the basic teladi fighter cockpit. And it has fully mobile thruster pods that will even do complete flips. Paranid fighter has basically no moving parts except when the cockpit opens on landing.
EDIT: Honestly, I'm glad that every race has me thinking "...But I want iiiiiiit" for their small ships moment to moment.
Oh, right. ALI sells the "Nodan" Fighter. But it ends up being "What if. a slightly slower paranid fighter?" from my glance at it. It certainly looks nice though. Very "Traditional space fighter" It's got 700 cargo space though.
You need to go to their HQ, which varies from faction to faction (potentially from save seed to save seed). If you have the right amount of rep, then you will be given a mission when you were not looking, activate this for guidance to the HQ. and then the right elevator button.
There will be a bumpy border around the station, you can also filter for HQ to see it if you have already found the place. Sometimes it will be a wharf. other times it might be a trade station, or equipment dock.
I've seen some bugs with rank ups though. pre 1.3 MIN would give me the second rank label and no unlocks, for example. I still need to see if that's fixed for 1.3.
