If you want to make credits ASAP I would go with Silicon Wafers or something similar and cheap in terms of supply chain.
do you need production of food/meds? or can you trade them in? is there a way to automate that?
i really wish this sort of stuff was explained in game or at least through a decent encyclopedia or something
You can buy anything your base needs. There are Upkeep Quests that will actually tell you to assign Miners and Traders to your base after a point.
To have a Miner or Trader work for your base just select the Ship and RMB on the base and select "Trade/Mine for Base".
One other key note for the PHQ in general if it was not patched so far is the watch for the when the station gets renamed from "Unknown Base" to whatever the quest renames it to.
In order to avoid ship, trade and build problems rename and keep the base the name "Unknown Base". Seems the game script for AI processes only recognizes that name in relation to the Station.
Well you could just mine raw resources and have you base sell those instead of your Miners looking for deals. Although you would be competing with AI Miners at that point who sell directly to other bases. You colud lower the sale price on such and see if you can drive the AI Miners out of business?
And yes, that is a good idea before anyone storms in and says to be self sufficient. You want other factories to keep going, so buying from them is crucial.
