Flying between sectors? Confused!

Hi

From looking at the galaxy map, it seems that you should be able to transit from one sector to another without using jump gates, accelerators or highways. When I try flying to the edge of a sector, though, it seems that I can approach the edge but never cross it.

Is it possible to fly from one sector to another directly or are jumps required?

I dont think so. Visually, sectors are passable, but that is misleading

Nope - jumps/gates are required.

For comparison, Jump Gates go to other solar systems and stars. Super highways go across systems for long distance to other planets. Highways and Travel drive go across local areas, usually near planets. The map is not to scale...

But if you look around, you can usually see a long way. And that is how to find the gate, gates are really big and can be seen for a distance. Or follow other ships.
