Please give me Scan on hotkey
Title says it all

Edit:
Seems people get confused easy so just to be clear.
Not long range scan witch has a hotkey and can only be used via hotkey.
Not Station Scan that dont need a Hotkey.
Not Activate Scan modes which have hotkeys.
! This one ! Scan ships witch does not have a hotkey but needs a drop down menu to Activate it.

Added this to main post as well (Di Warde) made a good point !

There's also an issue, when muggers ask to drop your cargo and attack you, you cannot defend yourself before scanning them, revealing that this person (harassing and shooting you already) is a criminal! If you don't scan, you are marked as criminal yourself.

Yes, would also love the information panel not requiring the map to be up.

Shift-2 to turn on scan mode. Shift-3 for long range scanner. Hold 'R' to trigger the long range scanner scan. I think that's what you asked for?

I have a Logitech g13 programable keypad... Best gaming item Ive ever bought.
I also made a button box using a USB Joystick controller board and some momentary buttons.
Ive mapped scan to my hotas.

Theres lots of options, some are cheap, some not so much.

....? im sure i asked for scan on hotkey not long range scan....

To be clear, there are 3 different scans being talked about here. Scan 1, Scan 2, and Long Range Scan.
Scan 1 is the purple hud,
Scan 2 (The one without any hotkey) requires scan 1 to be active and scans ships for inventory, equipement, commands, etc.
Long Range scan is blue hud + pulse.

I think he mean scan from right-click menu on target ship (or any other target that you can scan) in short range scan mode (Shift+2). THAT scan MUST have hotkey bind.

i dont get why people asume the option im talking about is the ones with a hotkey and not asume im talking about the one without the hotkey lol ? puzzling

why on earth would i be asking for a hotkey for somthing that can only be used via a hotkey and has a hotkey.

Well in their defence far more puzzling things have been asked before so, dont take it the wrong way.

Now that it has been cleared what is meant we can concentrate on it, though more than passing it along I dont think anyone here can do.

I'm Completely flummoxed that this isn't a thing. How has no one at Egosoft never needed to scan a ship in combat or at all for that matter, wile testing and thought to themselves "Okay, I'm not doing a damn thing until I fix this."

Scan doesn't have a hokey. Scan MODE does.

Well, in defense of people that didn't know, we just didn't. How weird is that?

Now that I do, I'm going to go try it out. I already have an Argon police licence.

A key bind for this scan does sound like a good idea. Thanks for passing that on.

Part of why this is so surprising.

Sometimes (not always) I see a keyboard letter when I right click/press F to interact with locked targets.

...And then the listed key doesn't actually activate the scan. ooooops.

So it's even worse. The game taunts me with the possibility of what the OP is asking for. just out of reach.

...Man, I just realized. The sort of person who says "Learn to read the UI!" are the ones not reading the UI in this situation.

Since i posted this i have been thinking about it.
Scan Ships should be the same setup as scan stations.....

1. Activate scan mode.
2. Get within 1k of a ship and facing it.
3. Scan auto starts while you keep the ship in your crosshair.
4. Scan complete.

This should not need a drop down menu or a keybind simply activating scan mode and looking at a ship should trigger scan.

Scanning other ships without a licence is illigal and having the function start without a prompt will infuriate most players and thus is counterproductive.

A hot-key I agree would be great.

I may be missing things but just in case it's not just me...

Hot keys for:

Dropping mines in and out of combat.
Placing satellites.
Placing resource beacons.
Placing Nav beacons.
Inventory.

Oh and right click functionality for most things from the ship you are flying. ie right click a station and 'fly to' 'dock with'(from any range and not just asking docking permission). Loot crates - RMB menu to interact with from map screen. Most things can be done with a remote controlled ship but the game assumes with you on board (Pilot or not) you want to do everything the hard way.
Sometimes I port off just to use RMB options for a ship cos it's easier.

Feel free to enlighten me if I have missed any of the above options. It's not just possible but likely. Game is not well explained or even slightly intuitive control wise.
