A whole abandoned frigate?!

I was never going to buy an Argon Cerberus. The design didn't look great, the turret coverage was poor (and it's one of the better ones in the game; only the frigging Argon bomber has actual decent turret coverage, or will when turrets actually work) and it just generally didn't seem interesting.

But while I was doing the plot mission to rescue the talking dolphin beaver bug, I passed a Cerberus on the way to the mission nav point. At first I thought it was the ship I was supposed to escort, or maybe something I was going to have to fight off, but no, it was just sitting there. I proceeded with the mission... and while I did, my sector trader let me know there was an abandoned ship around.

It was that Cerberus frigate. In Argon Prime of all places, just sitting there, fully intact, fully equipped (all the gear vanished when I claimed it, dammit) and abandoned, waiting for me to pick it up, brush it off, and put it to work guarding my mining operations.

So my question is, was that a scripted event? Does everyone find a Cerberus frigate in pristine condition abandoned right by the start of their quest to rescue Bozo Toes or whatever his name is? Or did I just catch some ridiculously, too-good RNG luck?

Just follow the main quest line/PHQ mission, you get it by scanning a signal at any station.

I left the starting system with the tutorial start beggining. I did the tutorial.

I got some kind of fighting the Xenon quest to do from the Argon, is that it?

I have found 3 ships in 3 places where multiple other people have found them, they are scripted.

You don't automatically get it. I would never have even realized it was there waiting to be claimed if my sector trader hadn't piped up and told me an abandoned ship was there. Not only that but if I hadn't answered the comm and told him to protect it, I wouldn't have known which ship it was and would've thought it had been claimed while I did the mission. So I just lucked out, and easily could have missed it.

i was in xenon capital and all of a sudden i got a message of an abandoned ship (Cerberus Sentinal) found by a trader, ive flown through the area it was in many times b4 that so they seem to spawn over time or somthing , i also got an Ides Sentinal that was surounded by a mine field,

found a Pulsar in early game and omg i was lucky, if anyone doesnt know thats a 6 gun small ship from antigone republic.

But were you paying attention? Its very easy to miss a ship sitting there. Did you just follow the mission and protect the ship? Did you do the cap tutorial at that moment like it asks you to do?

yes and i know i did not miss it. i even just rechecked the save on my current game. there is no ship for me. i did the capture tut when asked on all my saves.

It never asked me to do the capture tutorial. I figured it out for myself after the mission was over, when I followed my trader back to the thing. Luckily I had some marines. In fact, luckily I had four of them, because I tried to claim it twice in a row before realizing it had worked the first time; my first two marines got in each other's way and wouldn't board the thing. They wouldn't come back either; I had to fire them both, shoot the empty pods, and try again. But third time was the charm, and I got a Cerberus and decided not to sell it. I've decided I don't especially like to fly it, but it'll do as a guard dog. Which is fitting, if you know the origins of the name.

A miner of mine stumbled upon an abandoned Cerberus too. The equipment disappearing is very annoying.

I don't know whether it's scripted or not, but in the same mission I found an abandoned Osprey Vanguard in Silent Witness

From what i have seen in my many plays i find the following:

1. a set group of ships is always available.
2. the M ship being referenced is always there but tied specifically to a quest event on that particular mission.
3. the M ship is usually missing major equipment like shields, so requires you to avoid triggering the next phase of the step to snag the ship, equip it, and then go to the mission (that quest is easy enough to where if you have half way decent skills you can complete it with the starter ship)
4. the M ship and location is based upon what territory you are in when you initiate the quest (when you first find the boron). If you are in argon space, you will this phase of the quest in argon territory (or at least close to argon territory) and a cerberus will be the ship. If you find the boron in teladi space you will get a teladi class M, etc.

I usually complete this part within 3-4 hrs of a playthrough, and generally have millions available (from selling the other derelics or ndvidium mining)

All abandoned ships face north in the sector map when in radar range of you or one of your ships. at least in my experience. I have claimed many just simply checking out sector traffic and finding a non moving ship facing north

A quick google of X4 Abandoned ships will provide a number of links to various vids showing.
locations of a number of ships.

For S an M size ships to keep weapons etc intact you should use your Space suit and enter the ship yourself after repairing.

For larger ships [There is one L] Use you space suit AND an EMP bomb to enter the ship/

If you opt for the easiest way by sending a Marine to claim the ship there will be damage.

Well I got always a cerberus in the boron plotline.

Also there are placed abbandoned ships. You can find a destroyer too in a specific sector ;)
