X4 will disappoint you if it does.
The concern i have about the single player campaign is its not the full game (a bit like if you ONLY had the main story in TC/AP and couldnt do free roam stuff). As in, you can do a bunch of stuff but you won't be able to use all the features of the full game as they're online only.
For the full game, $$$ balance issues aside its going to be amazing. They've taken a lot of the new concepts from NMS and polished them, and most of the standard space game fare like mining and combat which all looks decent.
Of course, a large problem is they want it to be "bigger and better than everything else". Which means beating newly released games. Starfield is likely to be released before squadron 42, which is then going to push back SQ42 as they need to redesign to compete. X:5 will quite possibly be released before SC as well.
SQ42 and SC should really be independant games.
I saw an article (read or youtube, not sure) that argued that what CIG really needs is one of those hardnosed EA executives who basically tell them: "No. FK U. No more new features. Fix what's broken, finish what's planned, release this next year. NO. NO MORE FEATURES. If you can't finish this, you're fired."
It really feels like that's what's needed if it's ever going to come out in any way, shape or form.
Which brings us back to X4. Egosoft releases it, so people can hammer it and break it, and they can fix their bugs quickly, instead of keeping it back until they have all features perfectly working. Which of course will never happen, so the game never releases..
They do :) They have quite a bit of experience with that from the X3 days, so I think they're right about it. The thing is, at one point you need to make a decision: What's the core pack that needs to work, and when can we release it. Because with games of the scope of X4 and SC, you can't ever release if you want everything to be in the game. So release it, see how the response is, what people want, then focus on that.
It's kind of the Agile of gaming :D
But it's an alpha it's buggy, and they just started to fill it with content, so at the moment there's not much to do apart from trading, few misdions and having fun with friends.
Problem is many ppl bashing SC or saying it will never release have no idea what they are talking about.
It is by no means a finished game, but considering the scope, that they are making two games - one of which is a huge MMO, and they started from zero shows they are not late compared to any other game development. They just shouldn't have state unrealistic release dates.
Heck it's in development for 6 years (which is a fact because they only licensed Cryengine end of 2012 after tge kickstarter, so silly statements like 7-8-9-10 years are just that, silly) the same time as Cyberpunk 2077, and CDPR is an established studio and CP2077 is just a single player game. While CIG had to build up all the company on the fly , and they are making a technically next gen MMO+ a single player.
So yeah it takes a long time, and it's not ready to play if you can't put up with a buggy alpha, but it is awesome already.
That said if anyone interested in SC try it out on one of the free fly weekends, and judge if it's worth any money. If you feel it you can support them, if you don't then don't. If you feel it has promise but not there yet, try it later on the next free fly.
Grownups can decide when they feel like something is for them, but making statements about how other ppl spend their money is useless.
I want to ride. Horse or unicorn?
Nice to hear from another Star Citizen salesman who doesnt own X4, on these forums, again.
