Terrible performance. Very low CPU and GPU Usage
Hi all

Can anybody give me any idea as to why this game is performing absolutely terribly for me? Watching resource monitor and MSI afterburner this game is using barely any resources. CPU only about 30% at the highest, same with graphics card. Over 20gb of ram free...

So why is this game performing so terribly for me? 20 - 35 FPS in stations, 50-70 out in space.

Any ideas would be great. Specs are as follows

i7 6700k
RTX 2080
32GB DDR 4

Wait until you have even a small empire with all regions satellite'd and open the map. That's where the real fun begins. The engine isn't optimised or is poorly designed. My specific gripe with the game is something I don't believe is resolvable in their 'engine' (real-time mapping).

Your specific problem is likely caused by buffering or anti-aliasing. Try turning those down/off and see if it helps. Less objects in space after all.

Question are you running 3.0 beta or 2.6?

This kind of performance is quite common for your hardware spec and the 2.60 version. The 3.0 beta version has engine optimizations where the performance improves quite a lot. Also do you use vsync? The nvidia vsync option limits fps to multiples of your monitors frequency. If you have set 60 Hz and fps falls below this, the vsync option limits fps to 30 fps to avoid tearing. You should at least use adaptive vsync, which is not doing this. And yeah, avoid anti aliasing, this is not doing so well. Also setting the X4 nvidia profile to performance helps somewhat.

Cheers for the replies guys!

I'm playing 3.0beta

I'll have a fiddle with those settings now

The performance in stations is low, especially if there is a lot of action nearby. It can easily fall below 10 fps, if some Xenon attacking the station.

If you have V-Sync on, turn it off. I noticed it tanked performance in X4 really badly for some reason (80 FPS became 20 FPS)

It's a badly optimised game, the fan boys will say different.

This guy played the game for 1k hours and gave it a bad review... Even if you let the game run for hours in seta that's very huge amount of time spent on something you hate ^^
Your brain must have malted after all those hours spent in the x universe ^^

No offense intended.

just to make that clear... 1k hours does not means 1k hours of active user input... one can literally dock on a station and sit there... doing nothing for 1k hours... and/or over several nights.

also this review seems a bit outdated as it only had around 147 hours of playing when it was published.

No issues with performance for me. I have a rx 480, and an I5 with 16gb ram. Mostly maxed out settings as well. Watched my fps at one point closely and never saw it dip below 45 in an asteroid field or on station. I have seen lots complain with i7 cpus I'm not sure if that's a coincidence or not.

So it could be a hyperthreading/SMT issue.

I've pretty much tried everything and it is still the same. I've been playing a bit more though and have just learned to deal with it.

It must be some limitation in the game engine as it is chugging while not even trying to take advantage of most of my system's resources.

I could deal with this in X3 as it is an old engine that is not designed to utilise modern hardware, but this game just shouldn't have this issue.

Hopefully they'll make a decent engine for the next game. Probably going to have to wait a good few years for that though :\

16gb 3200Mhz
Ryzen 7 3700
GTX 1080 Ti FTW3
1Tb Sony M2.2 SSD for os stuff
2TB Firecuda (hybrid SSD-HD)
GPU power setting 80%
78-80 FPS (consistantly) in front of my complex with drones flying about

All settings for game high (no v-sync)

No graphical or running issues for me.

1000hrs at 12 hours a day = 83 days. 11.85 weeks. 2.96 months.
