Compared to Star Sector
In starsector I can quite happily survey the market for material deficits and supply them to make money whilst taking the odd bounty now n then
Am I able to do that here? and if so how does it differ?

you can also do the same here when you get far enough along in the game. There's a 10 mil purchase which allows you to have coverage of each station owned by that faction.

Until you get that much money you can drop a satellite by a station and get the same coverage.

For instance, a good method for starting is getting a miner (or 5) with a 3 star captain (50/50 chance). Set him up for auto-mining Nvidivium and drop a satellite by all Argon and Teladi outposts (the only places which buy it). The autominer will automatically go to the one where he gets the best price and make a sale. You should get 500k every 5-10 minutes. Considering this is a 700-800k investment, your return on investment is very good.

I basically buy 10 miners as quickly as possible. up to 5 3 star pilots will be nvidium and the other guys will be sector miners selling silicon (you can space them out).

This also gives you a minor amount of faction reputation for each sell they make, so it is win-win.

By the time I'm 2-3 hrs in the game I usually have 30million in cash.

I can't speak of the comparison between the two on trading(Star Sector's trading system is such that a 'milk run' doesn't exist, thus I found it hard to do anything but scavenge and combat.) But, as long as you take the time to setup a network of satellites, you can see the trading prices in real-time. This does not preclude a rival trader from selling before you get to the destination however.

I'd say it's somewhat similar. In SS regular trade is not profitable due to taxes, so you have to find(or create) destabilized markets. In X4 regular trade is still profitable, however the big money is also in market disruption. War(resulting in station destruction) or player sabotage(land on station and hack it) can yield huge profit$$. In X4 there are more ways to generate income passively(auto mine/trade), but if you want to earn billions you will have to work for it.

Like SS you can eventually become your own empire and become completely independent(including ship production). Unlike SS ship customization is not as good(fewer design choices and ships in general). However, combat is still fun and immersive.

Both games transcend to godhood with mods.

VRO - much better weapon/ship balance + integrated XL battleship mod.

Plus a few minor mods: no highways(works well with VRO), HQ 2.0(better looking hq - steam workshop), escape teleport(wokshop). You can always browse workshop for additional mods to plug any holes with missing features.

I would personally wait for 3.0 though. It is going to be released soon and mods will have to be updated and likely require new game(at least VRO). Not to mention a lot of moders are waiting for 3.0 to bring life back into the game, so even more mods will be available.

SS:
Nexerelin(just can't play without), DME, DA, BRDY, and other faction packs.

don't do it. starsector is 15 and is a better game overall then X4. The X series hasn't been good since x3

I love space games so I checked it out but 2D is just not what I'm looking for while 3D exists. Left those days back with my Commodore.
